"Community Connections not only provides local Oakville businesses a chance to market themselves to a spe cific target market, it really makes a dif ference in what we can offer our resi dents," said Chisholm. "As Oakville continues to grow, so does the need for recreational activities and services...and the funds for these programs must come for the programs themselves." Photo by C hristine Smyth Dr. Yosh Nabeta: after 40 years of dentistry, it's time to retire. How many people can say that when they retire they will be missed by generations of families? Oakville dentist Yosh Nabeta is retiring and multiple generations of families will indeed miss their favourite dentist. Dr. Nabeta has had his office in the Hopedale Mall for as long as the mall has had offices, almost 40 years. "I still have some patients right from the first month I started," said Dr. Nabeta on his second last day of work. "When I first started out about 75% of my patients were children. It's changed almost the other way around now. They've all grown up. I haven't taken new patients for awhile now, but I still get the children and grandchil dren of my original patients." Dr. Nabeta made a decision long ago to keep his practice small enough for just one dentist to handle. He never wanted his practice to become so big that it became impersonal. Money has never been a motivating factor for Dr. Nabeta. He has done dentistry for the love of it. "I've really enjoyed the last few years as a dentist knowing that I could retire anytime I wanted to," he said. It was after a stay in the hospital this summer that he decided it was time to make the change and do some of the things he's always put off for another day. Dr. Nabeta's receptionist, Tina, has been with him since April, 1985. She spoke of his kindness and the fact that he treated his patients with care and respect. "He gave everyone one-on-one care. Everyone is important to Dr. Nabeta. He will be hard to replace," she said. His receptionist said there is one trait that Dr. Nabeta displayed to all his patients. "Every time Dr. Nabeta gave a needle to one of his patients he would say `ouch.' He always felt the pain for his patients." The day before Dr. Nabeta passed the torch to the dentist taking over his practice, his office was busy with patients who had come to say good bye. Betty Reade and her daughter M orna Snair, along with M orna's young son came to thank Dr. Nabeta for his care. They brought cards and cookies . Reade recalled that when she was looking for a dentist many years ago, she was referred to a Dr. Nabeta. In fact, her friend intended to send her to Dr. K. Nabeta, on Trafalgar Rd, the younger brother of Dr. Yosh Nabeta. But she was so pleased with Dr. Yosh, she has stayed with him all these years. Dr. Nabeta is the original tenant in his office. He rented his office space even before the offices in the Hopedale Mall building were finished being built. He is still in the same office today. Before the mall was enclosed, he was able to look out his office win dow and watch people walk by. His retirement plans are still in the * early stages. "I'm going to try and see if I can work with a computer. Some of the young children come in here and tell me I'm a dinosaur because I haven't got a computer." Dr. Nabeta was bom in British Columbia, but moved to Mississauga when he was 11 years-old. He gradu ated from Port Credit High School and went on to the University of Toronto in what was then a pre-dental program and then graduated from dentistry. He became a dentist in 1958. He has two brothers also practicing dentistry in Halton.
