Friday, October 27, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Best kept secret in Oakville By Oakwood Public School's Journalism Club O akwood Public School is tucked away in a little corner of Oakville, but it is definitely alive and active! It is, to many parents, teachers and students, the best kept secret of Oakville. Our school has stood the test of time. We have overcome two years of 'closure' battles and we're still here. Enrollment has grown by 30% in this past year alone. Oakwood provides many programs and activities for stu dents. We prom ote Quality Daily Fitness (Q.D.F.), the Breakfast Program, the Story Telling club, We Love Reading program, Cozy Reading, and many more. Oakwood Public School is also proud to welcome new immigrant families. The Reception Centre at Oakwood wel comes and provides support to new ESL families in Oakville. The centre provides a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere where parents and students can have their ques tions answered. The Oakwood Reception Centre also provides assess ment and placement for ESL students. Our breakfast program is now in its second year. It was founded by two Oakwood teachers who noted that a number of children were coming to school with no breakfast. The teachers felt that a child who is hungry is not going to learn and so, out of their own pockets, they established a small pro gram. Today, the program feeds 40 to 50 children and has the support of the United Way. Healthy recess snacks such as tanger ines and raisins are important at Oakwood. These snacks are provided by 'Xi Epsilon Phi.' Parent volunteers pur chase the food from a local supplier and staff the program. Our neighbouring seniors are very dear to us at Oakwood. They volunteer in many of our school events. Seniors and students have also founded a gar dening club and an arts and crafts club. Oakwood students help seniors with their gardens and in the winter, they work with indoor plants and making crafts. Reading is im portant to us at Oakwood and the 'We Love Reading' program is designed to promote the KIDS SPEAK OUT School News importance of reading. Our focus is to show how reading is not just important for suc cess at school, but also in the everyday life of people in professions that are easily recognizable by students. On a regular basis, pro fessionals, dressed in the uni form that describes their job, come to our school and read to Grades 1, 2 and 3. They also talk about the impor tance of reading. This creates enthusiasm and interest in reading. The Grades 3 and 4 stu dents can join another club that features reading and lis tening skills. The Story Telling Club provides an opportunity for students to follow-up teacher read sto ries by story mapping and visualization. The students then practice becoming sto rytellers to various audi ences. Both reading activities have been joined by another, the Oakwood Journalism Club. We're going to keep Oakville well-informed about the great people and programs we have at this school -- Oakville's best kept secret! cn jc & h iC H e y lu u k !
