He's been married for over 40 years and has four chil dren. What you might not know by looking is that James is a survivor. James' sexual abuse began when he was 14, at the hands of a male pedophile. His abuse continued for nine years until he married. James never spoke of his abuse to his wife, however, 27 years later, his abuser did. There are a number of diffi culties common to all survivors as a result of their abuse experi ences, such as depression, low self-esteem and difficulty trust ing. For James, sudden outbursts of anger were frequent. He abused his wife both verbally and emotionally. When a crisis occurred in his life this year, Jam es knew som ething was wrong. His wife, who suspected BY THE WAY a connection between his emo tional state and his childhood abuse, urged him to visit the Halton Trauma Centre. After only 15 weeks attend ing the Male Survivors Group, James reports, "My self esteem has greatly improved and I have a new confidence in myself. I do not get as angry as often as I used to. I have shed tears of joy at the discovery that 1 can have a much deeper emotional and intimate relationship with my wife." "I am so very grateful to the Centre and to the two skilled, understanding and committed therapists for the opportunity to embark on my journey. A ghost lurking in the background, enveloping me in a black cloud, is gone."
