On the second day of the trial in O akville provincial court, defence lawyers suggested the after-school fight was sparked by a lunch-time incident in which one of the accused had hit one of the victims in the back of the head with a snowball. But the two victims rejected defence lawyers suggestions, Wednesday, that the lunch incident led to the school-yard fight afterwards. Former Toronto Argonaut football player Dan Ferrone captured the party's local nom ination on Wednesday night, with a decisive win over opponent Dr. Jack Richman. More than three-quarters of the nearly 500 voters in attendance at the meeting selected Ferrone, a well-known local busi nessman, to run under the new party's ban ner. The officially tally was 365-108 in favour of Ferrone. Owner of Ferrone Fitness, and president of the Canadian Football League Players' Association, he is also known for his volun teer activities for such organizations as the O akville Dream Home Lottery. Cancer Society, the United Way, Big Brothers and the Red Cross. In 1998, he won a Mayor's Award for Business and the Arts Community Builder Award. In his speech to Oakville Alliance mem bers, Ferrone concentrated on w hat he described as the arrogance of the governing Liberals and the new party's ability to win in Oakville. In his football career, Ferrone said, he could always sense the critical moment when the opposing team was beginning to collapse. "That's the feeling I have now. We have the Liberals on the run." A former Progressive Conservative party member, Ferrone said the Alliance will offer Canadians tax breaks, reform of the Young Offenders Act, a stronger health care system INSIDE today' s paper Real E sta te .................... .26-27 E n te rtain m e n t............... .28-36 W orship............................. .36 S p o rts........................... .37-39 B u sin e ss................ 40 C la ssifie d ....................... 43-47 Photo by Peter C. McCusker Dan Ferrone defeated Dr. Jack Richman by 365-108 votes to win the Canadian Alliance Oakville Riding nomination, Wednesday night. and a regularly scheduled election call. Describing Finance M inister Paul Martin's announcements last week as "a stolen budget," Ferrone cautioned voters not to count on the promises Martin made regarding tax cuts. Seven years ago, he noted, the Liberals were elected on a promise to kill the GST. Ferrone, who grew up in Oakville and graduated from T.A. Blakelock high school, said if elected, he will bring the concerns of local residents to the federal Parliament.
