Oakville filmmaker a Gemini contender By Kathy Yanchus SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The awards, nominations and accolades keep flowing in for filmmaker David Tdcker. Tomorrow evening, Tucker will be among the nominees in the audience at the 15th annual Gemini Awards, awaiting the announcem ent o f the w inner for Best Science, Technology, N ature, E nvironm ent or Adventure Documentary Program. The three-day Gemini Awards event honours the best in Canadian production and talent, and T ucker's film, Parkinson' s: Lynda' s Story, which aired last year on The Nature o f Things, was one o f a mere five films for nomina tion in this broad-ranging category in which unprecedented numbers were produced. His bittersweet documentary followed a woman facing early onset Parkinson's, who underwent experimental surgery as part o f a clinical trial with the hope that a suc cessful treatment or intervention could be found. "We followed her for a year-and-a-half," said Tucker. "T hat's very unusual in television to be able to do that, but we stuck at it and followed it right through. There were many twists and turns in the story. It became almost like a three-act dramatic piece in a sense. "You get to understand the character and her challenges.' Then there's the decision to go ahead and get involved in the study and surgery; and then there were a lot of trials and tribulations along the way." At one point, said Tucker, the study was stopped and his subject w asn't sure she was going to get the operation. "She had been given the placebo, which was part o f the clinical study, and then she wanted the real thing so she had to go through all the waiting lists all over again. It was quite an agony for her and became quite a dramatic story, a real cliffhanger. Right into the late part of the film, you just did n 't know what was going to happen. We, the filmmakers, didn't even know." The experience was an intensely emotional one for all involved, said Tucker. Tucker's Gemini nomination marks the first time his name has actually appeared on the award, although his films have been used on nominations. For example, his documentary on arthritis for the Nature o f Things television program earned a nomination for David Suzuki as the series host. Tucker jokes that this is the first award, among the many presented to him, that he doesn't have to explain.
