Friday, October 27, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 3 for so m any excellent reasons... 1. Canada needs a strong central governm ent to speak for all Canadians... at home, and in an increasingly interconnected Global community. 2. The surpluses created by the Chretien/Martin economic turnaround in the 90's should n o w be reinvested in a balanced policy focussed on: - personal tax reduction - debt reduction and elimination social development, anchored by universally accessible, quality Health Care and including early childhood developm ent and post-secondary education Federal election choices have m any voters undecided The Oakville Beaver took to the streets this week to find out who people were planning to vote for in the federal election and why? Tim Turnbull, 43: I don't know, yet. I think the Liberals have done a lot of things to really abuse people and there's a lot of arro gance and power in calling this election. The Alliance - I'm ' not so sure about Tim H im bull some of their policies, I have some questions about their views on foreign aid and the like. And the other parties right now are nowhere. So it's going to be a tough decision, end of November. Eric Schmidt, 39: Alliance. Time for a gj change. I think tax payers' money's been misdirected, mis spent and I'm getting tired of it. Part of our problems with the deficit are as a result | of socialistic spend Eric Schm idt ing by the Liberals starting back in 1967. They haven't changed a thing. And the PCs had a chance with the Mulroney government and they were just as bad. So, the plat form that Mr. Day has presented is about change and it's something that I'm look ing forward to. Janet McGowan, 34: I haven't decided yet. I not very happy actually with any body that's running. I have a lot of thinking to do before I make a decision because I Janet don't really care for M cGow an A ll Coffee, End & Sofa fables On Sale These com m itm ents were part of the recent M artin mini-budget. 3. I'd like to see them (the can didates) say some more about taxes and what they're going to do with them. Education and health-care are also issues that concern me. I'd rather be voting for (George) Bush or (Al) Gore. Michele DuCharme, 42: I really don't have any idea because I really don't feel that there's much of a choice. I'm not excited about anybody. If we got some money for women who stay at Michele home with their chil DuCharme dren, that would real ly get my attention. Let's change that cur riculum, too. Let's start at the federal level and work our way down. I'm not happy with what's going on. Louise Hopkins, 83: I don't know. It's become very confusing having that new party...the Alliance. They've got to tell me more before I would decide to vote for them. Health-care (is important) and helping the young people, the young girls who are left with children - I real ly think that they need help, because I think they're left in situations that they (S ee 'Voters' pg. 14) -- JO SH U A CREEK T R A D IN G -- Bonnie at the opening of The Heritage Trails. ---------- & H O M E D E C O R ----------- FURNITURE A ll S o f a s , B e d ro o m S u ite s , O c c a s io n a l la b le s & A c c e s s o rie s O N SA LE 6.
