"W hen you add up the treatment costs on top of the productivity, absenteeism ... that' s $51 billion a year. Imagine what our econo my, what our com m unities w ould look like, if $51 billion a year could be redeployed into the varying needs w e have," said Dawe "It is a bit of a wake-up call. It' s intention ally a wake-up call." On average, 14 per cent of Canadians cur rently report their workplace is an "unsafe construct" mentally, Dawe noted, down from 20 per cent in prior studies. "Fourteen per cent is still an unaccept able number, but it' s improving. W e're talk ing about it, w e're focusing on it. Things are changing and that is a good idea," said Dawe. According to his bio, Dawe is focused on co-creating a new type of mental health care that prioritizes personaliza-tion, co-ordina tion and enablement. He spoke of the importance of technology in prom oting and creating optimal mental health, as there are smartphone apps that can help those seeking therapy, for example. "M indfulness-based stress reduction," conveyed through technological tools, al low s people to find the assistance they need with greater ease and privacy, he said. 82 N ELSO N ST · IN TER M EZZO H A IR.CO M · (905)-825-2840 "Technology allows us to actually put these tools right into the hands of the con sumer. You can carry with you, wherever you go, a totally evidence-based therapy package," said Dawe. Readily-available tools such as smart phone apps can help professionals start to "change the way mental health is applied in our society," Dawe explained, as it elim i nates the need to wait until som eone comes to them first. "W hat if w e can put these techniques and tools out, so that eventually, w e're creating a healthier com m unity?" asked Dawe. He said the notion of taking care of our selves isn 't "rocket science" and can be done in several steps including identifying, solving and talking about your problems, learning about stress management, reduc ing tension and taking your m ind off your problems. "Time does not heal all. D oing som ething about things heals all. Talking about things actually m akes them better or at least allows the opportunity to make them better," said Dawe. "It (mental health) is a very prevalent is sue. We can't talk about it enough."
