Sunday, November 12, 2000 THE O A K V ILLE BEAVER 5 Local issues dominate Ward 2 candidates meeting By Melanie Cum m ings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Municipal election candidates offered succinct one word answers, honest T don't knows' and even mentioned sex, all during Thursday night's Ward Two meet ing. The slate of eight candidates is filled with longtime activists and politicians alike, vying for the region al chair, a regional council seat and a seat on local council. About 65 residents attended the meet ing at the Oakville Christian School on Third Line. Discussions ranged from revitalizing Kerr Street, truck traffic concerns on Dorval Drive, and environmental protec tion issues. Organizers of the event, the West Oakville Ratepayers Inc. and Oakville South Central Residence Association, had attempted to focus discussion on the town's plans to privatize property assess ment services - the town pays $4.5 mil lion annually to a provincial body. The room united in applause when regional candidate Simon Dann said, "Ward Two has long been considered the wrong side of the tracks in Oakville. It's gotten the short end of the stick as far as services go, for too long." The community's passion to improve local life could possibly be summed up by longtime activist local council candi date Mary Paul, who likened her desire to Bazaar and Oliver stated they had lim ited knowledge on the matter. A limited debate over water pipe pro jects did ensue, briefly, among candidates for regional chair, which is being chosen by voters for the first time. Incumbent Joyce Savoline is attempt ing to hold on to her seat. She is being challenged by Anne Marsden and Lisa Cooper.
