A10 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday June 14,2000 Hair-raising event for charity ^ By Sandra Omand SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER A python draped over her shoulders, her dark hair a medusa-like mess, she strides purposefully around the other models dressed as luminescent angels and seeming ly locked in zombie states. The music is loud and driving, coloured lights wash the stage and the crowd is mesmerized. For 60 power-packed minutes, nine hair salons each put on a five-minute show. Called "Not Your Average Hair Show," the event took place Sunday night at Splash Night Club in Burlington with MC "Awesome Powers" - a.k.a. Bob Shea - keeping things moving and the crowd laughing. The benefit was staged in support Martha House, a Hamilton shelter for abused women and children. The sold-out show drew a mostly twenty-something audience of over 1,000 and raised $10,000. A success since it started four years ago, event organizers Salon Centre in are already turning their sights to next year. "Martha House is a great charity and we were glad that we were able to support them and plan on doing a show again next year," said Terry Shannon, co-owner of Salon Centre. Salon Centre hand picks each salon that participates. Only salons that have demonstrated a flair for creative design are chosen. "I have a three-and-a-half year old and an eleven month old, so this cause hits home for me," said Sabrina Parkinson, who owns the Bee Hive in downtown Oakville along with her husband and fellow stylist Stefan. "As a mother I think of what it would be like to be in a situation where you are being abused and have no where to go and that hits home 100%." The Bee Hive has participated in the Show since it started (it has run three times since 1996, but skipped last year) and plans to continue despite all of the preparation and anxiety it produces. Back stage prior to the show, Stefan Parkinson admit ted to being a nervous wreck. A situation not helped by the fact he had to substitute a model at the last minute after the original became ill. "I always have anxiety before we go on that's why we request starting near the top," said Parkinson, whose team was first on after singer Sonya Victoria. The Bee Hive, who has been working on their elabo rate headpieces for the last four months, chose a theme that was a dark contrast to the one chosen by DZ One. "It's an industrial theme and we called it `Waste'," said Stefan Parkinson. Model Dianna DiNoble, 25, said wearing the 10-pound headpiece was not easy and was actually painful when sparklers embedded in it were set on fire for the grand finale. "Stefan sets someone on fire every year," said Dinoble. "I can't wait to see what he has planned for next year." And judging by the enthusiastic reaction of the crowd, neither can they. Photos by Barrie Erskine Hair was the highlight of this year's Not your Average Hair Show on the weekend, with all proceeds going to charity. <3> N O T IC E O F P U B LIC M EETIN G O A K V IL L E S T R A T E G IC LA N D U S E O P T IO N S ST U D Y For Lan d s North of Dundas Street Files: 42.121.4 845-6601 o y iz o rfE Z oy*EZ In preparation for future urban development on the lands located north of Dundas Street [Regional Road 5] within the Town of Oakville and City of Burlington [east of Bronte Creek], the Town of Oakville together with the City of Burlington have completed the Strategic Land Use Options Study.
