Deciding to take a chance, she applied online -- and ended up being crowned Miss Halton. Locke will now compete at the Miss World Canada competition in July in Toronto. "I first did a Skype interview. I thought I blew it because my camera wasn't working. Then I got an email the next day that I was chosen as a finalist," she says. She had never participated in a pageant. Locke competed in the Ontario region competition Jan. 21-22 at the Novotel Hotel in Mississauga. Contestants were judged in categories including evening gown and swimwear, as well as interview skills and community outreach. "I was bullied all through high school and so I decided that if I ever had the chance, I would take the opportunity to help people who might be experiencing the same issues," said Locke, 23. "I was always told I was not good enough. Not just from a beauty perspective but personality W hat I wanted to achieve was to show what I can do and for people to see me as a person rather than what I looked like on stage." Locke, who is currendy working as a scenic artist on him sets, is using her platform to team up with First Nations groups across Canada to gamer support for important issues. She is planning to start a non-profit organization to bring awareness to the missing and murdered indigenous women of Canada. On Pink Shirt Day Feb. 22, Locke participated in an anti bullying campaign at Sheridan College. She and a friend will be creating events across Oakville to support these causes. I didn't think I would ever win," says the Iroquois Ridge High School graduate. "I feel really honoured, but I also want to use this opportunity to reach out to my community as much as possible."
