C4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 28, 2000 C A N A D AD A Y Canadian Heritage: How n June 20, 1868, a proclam ation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her M ajesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration o f the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st. The July 1 holiday was established by statute in 1879, under the name Dominion Day. There is no record of organized cerem onies after this first anniversary, except for the 50th anniversary of Confederation in 1917, at which time the new Centre Block of the Parliam ent Buildings, under construction, was dedi cated as a m emorial to the Fathers of Confederation and to Canada Day celebrations originated afternoon, a sunset cerem ony in the evening followed by a mass band concert and firew orks display. Another highlight was C anada's Centennial in 1967 when Her M ajesty Queen Elizabeth II attended the celebrations with Parliam ent Hill again being the backdrop for a large scale official ceremony. The format changed in 1968 with the addition of m ulti cultural and professional concerts held on Parliam ent Hill including a nationally televised show. Up until 1975, the focus of the celebrations, under the name "Festival Canada", was held in the National Capital Region during the whole month of July and involved num erous cultural, artistic and sport activities, as well as m unicipalities and voluntary organizations. The celebration was cancelled in 1976 but was reactivat ed in 1977. A new form ula was developed in 1980 whereby the National Com m ittee (the federal governm ent organization charged with planning C an ad a's B irthday celebrations) stressed and sponsored the developm ent of local celebrations all across Canada. "Seed m oney" was distributed to promote popular and am ateur activ ities organized by volunteer groups in hundreds o f local com m unities. The same approach was also follow ed for the 1981 celebrations with the addition o f firew orks displays in 15 major cities across the nation. On O ctober 27, 1982, July 1st which was known as "Dominion Day" becam e "Canada Day" . Since 1985, Canada Day Com mittees are established in each province and territory to plan, organize and coordinate the Canada Day celebrations locally. Grants are provided by the Departm ent to those com m ittees. Well before the coming of the first European settlers, Canada's aboriginal peoples had discovered the food proper ties of maple sap, which they gathered every spring. According to many historians, the maple leaf began to serve as a Canadian symbol as early as 1700. In 1834, the first St. Jean Baptiste Society in North America made the maple leaf its emblem. In 1836, Le Canadien, a newspaper published in Lower Canada, referred to it as a suitable emblem for Canada. In 1848, the Toronto literary annual The Maple Leaf referred to it as the chosen emblem of Canada. By 1860, the maple leaf was incorporated into the badge of the 100th Regiment (Royal Canadians) and was used extensively in decorations for the visit of the Prince of Wales that year. Alexander Muir wrote The Maple Leaf Forever as Canada's confederation song in 1867; it was regarded as the national song for several decades. The maple leaf today appears on the penny. However, between 1876 and 1901, it appeared on all Canadian coins. The modern one-cent piece has two maple leaves on a com mon twig, a design that has gone almost unchanged since 1937. During the First World War, the maple leaf was included in the badge of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Since 1921, the Royal Arms of Canada have included three maple leaves as a distinctive Canadian emblem. With the procla mation of Canada's new flag in 1965, the maple leaf has become the most-prominent Canadian symbol. In 1939, at the time of World War II, many Canadian troops used the maple leaf as a distinctive sign, displaying it on regimental badges and Canadian army and naval equip ment. In 1957, the colour of the maple leaves on the arms of Canada was changed from green to red, one of Canada's official colours. On February 15, 1965, the red maple leaf flag was inau gurated as the National Flag of Canada.
