James Snow, Ken Brandson, Bill French, Bill Robinson, Tony Beale, Cindy Lunau and John Ford as well as life members Ninalee Craig and Allan Burton were invited, but did n't appear. "Part of me is and part of me isn't," said Melanie Wojick, executive director of the foundation on whether she was surprised that the former foundation members, who were relieved of their positions in March, didn't show up. "It's unfortunate." CH board of directors voted to dismiss the volun teer fund-raising members so they could "create a fresh start." The dismissals came after the foundation board had changed their strategic direction from hosting events to asking for corpo rate donations. Many of the foundation members didn't like the change and the meetings became unproductive as people spent more time arguing about the past, rather than moving forward, said former foundation chair Dick Haas, at an earlier interview. But not all of the founda tion members agreed with the decision to dismiss the board. Many were shocked when their terms were pushed back to March 30 and then they were fired the next day. In earlier interviews, Cindy Lunau questioned the legality of the move as well as the fairness of asking peo ple who have been soliciting donations for years to reap ply for their job. But despite the hard feel- ings, CH decided to invite the former members to a presentation that recognized their hard work. "We still want to recog nize the past services of those individuals," said Gary Hutton, the director of mar keting and community rela tions services of CH. "Conservation Halton appre ciates their work and effort. It's important to recognize those people's past achieve ments." Even though the former members didn't attend, foundation member Jack Arno will be hand-deliver ing a framed picture of Crawford Lake to each person. The matting will have the individual's name as well as an inscription that reads "In recognition of your contribution to Conservation Halton Foundation." Regional Council agreed last week to focus on singles after learning they're the most under-served population in Halton when it comes to affordable housing. "They tend to be a group that isn't thought about in terms of needs," said Gwen Maloney, Director of the Halton NonProfit Housing Corporation Division. "They're coming to us for one bedroom apartments and we don't have any." When most social housing units were being constructed, single people weren't fingered as a priority, explained Maloney. By the time their need became obvious, rental units in general had ceased to be profitable. New units stopped being built, leading to the current region-wide shortage of rental housing. Today, Halton's vacancy rate is less than one per cent. But it doesn't pay for builders to dip back into the rental market with land and constructions costs as high as they are, said Maloney. "The private sector has told us they don't make money building rental housing," she said. "They're better off to build condos or other types of ownership housing." So when the province announced it would help fund 84 rent supplement units in Halton, Maloney saw it as an oppor tunity to correct some of the earlier imbalances. The next step is to encourage landlords to take the province up on its offer. To that end, the Region is poised to launch an information and advertising blitz geared to area landlords. Sale *416 ea.
