Wednesday, July 12, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 O T grad is Eskimo lineman in training By Scott MacArthur SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The CFL experience has been a blast for Oakville's contribution to the millennium's first rookie crop. Tim Bakker, 22, an Oakville Trafalgar High School graduate and University of Western Ontario alumnist, was drafted thirdoverall by the Edmonton Eskimos in the first round of this year's CFL draft. After an impressive camp in which the offensive lineman pleased the coaches with his work ethic, Bakker has started the season on the practice roster. He's comfortable with his early role, as it allows him to develop with his teammates at practice before he steps into game action. "I got into the two pre-season games and it was a great experience," he said. "I'm one of seven offensive linemen and the other six guys are veterans, so the coaches are bringing me along slowly and I'm able to learn from the other guys." Baicker is encouraged by the support the Eskimos receive in Edmonton, and is finding the transition to living in western Canada easy. The team's future potential has him excited. "Edmonton is a great city and I'm having a lot of fun," he said. "I love my team and we have a lot of potential, so the future looks bright." If he continues to develop, Bakker could see some regular season game time before the season is done. "I hope to be dressing for games, maybe by the middle of the season," he said. "I just have to keep working hard and we'll see where it goes." Explosion power past Mount Hamilton In a closely fought contest, Girls U14 rep Soccer team Explosion edged Mount Hamilton 4-3 at Shell Park on Monday. Using three strikers and pushing mid fielders forward, Mt. Hamilton gave Explosion defenders fits. But the Explosion seemed to dominate the midfield, especially the second half and strong wing play created many Explosion chances. Explosion opened the scorong 20 minutes in with a goal from Heather , Lockhart, sent wide open by Jennifer Pitkin. [ Mt. Hamilton bounced back, however, and the half ended tied 1-1. With the arrival of Keeper Katarina Vulic at-the half, Jessica Pudwell left the net to help control the play in midfield. Whenever Explosion kept the ball on the floor and patiently passed to create space they created opportunities. Lauren Pulford's second half was particulalrly strong as she regularly beat Mt. Hamilton's defence and put cross arfter cross into the area. Jennifer Pitkin scored the second and third Explosion goals with strong determined play in the box, and it looked to be a cruise - until Mt. Hamilton clawed their way even with a nice goal and an opportunistic steal, almost from Vulic's hands. With the score tied 3-3 and time winding down Oakville set to work. After the kick Laurren Pulford lead the attack down the side. After a couple of attempts Explosion earned a direct free kick. Mt. Hamilton cleared, but Alyssa Sczelecki seized the clearance and sent a pass into Tanya Dias, who turned and with a mighty strike scored the win ner. The last five minutes were played with five defenders and Explosion were never threatened as Heather Lockhart made two fine runs that used up the clock. A well deserved win with kudos also to Brooke Johnson, who had a marvellous second half, and Alyssa Sczelecki who's presence in the middle against the big Mt. Hamilton forwards was vital. T im Bakker Vortex dom inate Brantford in League Cup play Oakville Vortex U13 A boys' soccer team defeated Brantford 5-1 in league cup play at River Oaks field, Saturday. Play in the first half was tight and man to man; with most of the activity in the Brantford end. The score at the half was tied 0-0. Forward Craig Nazare put Oakville on the scoreboard just into the second half. Brantford retaliated shortly after with one of the few Brantford shots on net to score their lone goal and tie the game 1-1. During the second half, Oakville goalie, Jason Goulart saw very little action in the Oakville end. Vortex forwards Craig Nazare and Robin Valadares responded to the call with a pair of goals and set tone for the rest of the game. Michael Rocha and Mitchell French rushed to the net and Oakville fans held their breath as the shot dribbled wide of the net. On the next rush to the net, however, Rocha made no mistake and fired past the Brantford net minder. Midfielder Dominic Polla contributed with a kick from inside the half that bounced behind the Brantford goalie. Thomas Adamyk and Billy Hatch were formidable in not allowing Brantford to penetrate beyond mid-field. Tim Downey showed renewed vigor as a Vortex winger and forward Andrew Rodrigues provided offensive support with his agility. Oakville Vortex defender Andrew Yeh is increasingly confident with his kicks. The rest of the Oakville defender squad consisting of Frank Butty, Andrew Buxton-Forman and the speedy Michael Marchessault shut down the Brantford rushes to the net. The team's next league play is in St. Catherines and Waterloo this week. Oakville Vortex are sponsored by Nortel, Hatch and Skyline Aviation. Ontario Cup Play On July 7th, Explosion travelled to Brantford for their first round League Cup. Brantford proved to be surprising ly stubborn and Explosjon had difficulty finding the net despite largely carrying the play to Brantfords half. After a scoreless first half Jessica Sacripante finished a lovely effort to put Explosion ahead. However on a direct kick Brantford managed to collect a rebound from the keeper and push the tying goal in. Explosion, in workman-like fashion marched back up the field and put all kinds of pressure on Brantford, until Tanya Dias earned a penalty kick as she was roughly tackled from behind just as she was set to shoot from 9 yards. Jessica Sacripante slotted home the penalty. Brantford managed a brief flurry near the end, but Explosion hung on to advance to the next round.
