Both the shot and the weekend. People are still talking about T iger's improbable 218-yard blast out of a fairway bunker which set up a birdie to preserve his one-stroke lead for the Bell Canadian Open cham pi onship. On Monday, at an annual charity event at Glen Abbey in which regular mortal golfers get to play from the pro tees, many a golfer, when they got to that final fairway, couldn't resist pitching a ball into the bunker and trying to emulate Tiger. Just like tourists who visit Abbey Road just have to cross the street. Glen Abbey will now probably have to hire marshals to keep players going smoothly through that final fairway bunker. "No, you can't play a second ball -- Please play along!" The shot typified the weekend -- a real blast. The late addition o f Tiger to the field -- ju st a day before the Friday `We had to add more people on almost every area, from will-call to admissions, to marshals to security. ' a blast! Tiger Woods was also 20 when he played his first Open at the Abbey in `96. He finished 11th. Stay tuned. GRANT WAITE sure earned our admiration and our hearts with his fearless battle. Sunday's final round sold out within hours, followed by the entire tournament selling out over the next few days and well before Thursday's first tee-off. And, rare in this day and age of over wrought mass media spectacles, it lived up to its hype. Tiger did his part. The first day, he was mediocre by his standards with a par. That left him far behind the leader at -7 and real close to the cut line (which would turn out to include everything worse than par). But Tiger, being Tiger, he sprang back into contention, caught up, and then overtook his prey in the end. His next three rounds were 65-6465, with only the last round being the lowest of the particular day. All com bined, though, it was good enough for a one-shot victory over previously unheralded Grant Waite, the latest of an ever changing legion of chal lengers who come out o f the woods each weekend to stalk the Tiger. Most recently, it was Bob May who almost caught the Tiger, before he, too, fell to the wayside in extra holes in the memorable conclusion to the PGA Championship, which the Bell Canadian Open managed to duplicate, in terms of excitement. Waite, a New Zealander, dutifully took up the Tiger hunt in Canada, a sister Commonwealth country that seemed to bring out the best in his game. Successive second place finish es at the Air Canada Championship at Surrey B.C. and, this past weekend, at the Bell Canadian Open have vaulted him from the dangerously low 121st place (top 125 retain their tour cards) all the way up into 35th with $963,000.
