Wednesday September 13, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 Letters to the Editor Student famine paid dividends As president of World Vision Canada, I would like to thank the 30Hour Famine participants and organiz ers in Oakville for their valuable contri bution to the most successful Canadian . 30-Hour Famine ever! The annual event has exceeded this year's goal of $3.5 million. To date, more than $3.8 million is being used to help needy children in developing countries. This year, Oakville students joined more than 150,000 young Canadians who registered for the national event held April 7th and 8th. By going without solid food for 30 hours and organizing local events, students raised money and increased awareness of global poverty. Participants in your community raised $26,665.31. This money will be used to help food programs in Rwanda, Kenya and Sudan, street kids in Cambodia and Romania, and relief efforts in Iraq. Breakfast programs and projects for street youth here in Canada also receive funding. We look forward to another success ful year in 2001, as we continue to help those in greatest need. Re: Infrastructure. The Hemson plan needs to be seen in the wider con text of Oakville's ongoing work with both the federal and provincial levels of government. We are working to secure a significant increase in their investment to municipal infrastructure programs, transportation solutions (roads, bridges and transit) and the widening of the information highway, to maximize the live/work opportunities within our com munities. 4. Re: Referendum. Although Council moved within the Province's required time frame to put a question on the November ballot, it related to the installation of billboards, not land use and growth. The resolution by Oakville council, however, does not ensure this question or any other question will, in fact, appear on the ballot. Recently, the Province denied a request from Ajax to place a question relating to amalgama tion on their ballot. The deadline for any additions to the ballot has passed. 5. Re: Expenditure o f existing tax payers' dollars on "population addi tions". Money spent on land use studies is funded by fiiture residents not the existing residents through Development Charges and processing fees. In addition, Oakville's Building Department is the only one we're aware of using the iEnterprise System of operation!, which maximizes cost recovery. Under Provincial legislation, Council and staff are required to process land use applica tions. If they fail to process within a rea sonable time frame, applicants may appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board. Experience has taught us that a timely process, framed by proactive studies such as the Land Use Study North of Highway 5, help secure locally driven solutions which can incorporate the con cerns of the existing community and withstand third party review. 6. Re: Economic Development. A sound and expanding economic base generates direct and indirect employ ment and widens the industrial/commercial tax base, allowing greater financial flexibility and wellness within such communities as our own. The Town requires an economic impact study to accompany all land use applications. 7. Re: Quality of Life. A difficult thing to measure or to anticipate for the fiiture. Indeed certain changes for every one depending on our circumstances, i.e. getting a new job in Oakville as opposed to commuting to Toronto or Markham, would obviously significantly change a persom's quality of life. A new park or valley trail, perhaps a library or a seniors centre, improvement to the harbour would advance the quality of life for other people. Even the recent cast iron watermain replacements have enhanced the quality of life for some residents by improved water pressure for their morn ing shower. For still others, the chance to move to Oakville potentially, residents north of Highway 5 would enhance their quality of life as they make the largest investment of their lives in purchasing their own dream home and begin to experience the same amenities that sup port the belief of many that our Town Oakville is different. Many members of Oakville staff and obviously all members of council, reside in Oakville. We may differ on our under standing of the land use process, but we all share the same commitment to the quality of life in Oakville, today and for the future.
