If you rent or sublet a house, a low-rise apartment (three storeys or less), or even a room in your home, you are invited to an open house Tuesday May 16 to provide input on a proposed bylaw to license residential rental housing. The goal of the bylaw is to ensure low-rise residential housing is safe, suitable and wellmaintained. In developing the guideline, the Town wants to consider both the needs of property owners and residents looking for rental housing. (1635-03/17) Insurance Once approved, the bylaw will expand Oakville's licensing program to include those who rent or lease out a house, a low-rise apartment or a room in a home. "The current regulations don't address many of the issues raised by residents in neighbourhoods that have been impacted by residential rental housing," said Mayor Rob Burton, in a media release. "We are hoping to develop a bylaw that will help the Town enhance the health and safety of tenants while protecting and maintaining the stability of residential areas." At the May 16 open house, landlords and tenants will learn details on the proposed bylaw's and the different classes of licenses -- whole home, non-owner occupied, owner occupied and lodging house. Staff will answer questions and record feedback that will help develop the final bylaw for council to review in October. The May 16 open house will be held in the Oakville/Palermo rooms at Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd., from 6:30-8 p.m. If preferred, residents can fill in the accessible feedback form on oakville.ca.
