w w w .insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 1 5 , 2 0 1 7 | 3 6 Bikers rev up for annual Ride for Dog Guides by Nathan Howes Oakville Beaver Staff On Saturday, June 17, bikers will be hitting the streets in Oakville to raise money for Dog Guides. Organized by the Lions Foundation of Canada, the Ride for Dog Guides is a national fundraising event catered to motorcyclists. This year, there are several rides happening in Ontario, but the feature ride starts in Oakville at the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides facility. Ride for Dog Guides was launched in 2009 by the Saltwater Retreads and the Enfield/Elmsdale Lions Club in Nova Scotia. Lions Foundation of Canada is a national charity dedicated to assisting Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them dog guides at no cost. Though each Ride for Dog Guides event varies in activities, most follow a scenic pre-arranged route and offer refreshments, incentives, prizes and a poker run. Money raised from the event goes directly towards helping Canadians with a medical or physical disability by giving them a dog guide freeof-charge. The Ride for Dog Guides takes place Saturday, June 17 at the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides facility, 152 Wilson St. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the ride begins at 10 a.m. To register or for more info, visit www. dogguides.com/ride/ in ,rfLHalton REG IO N halton.ca (| 311 YoufB NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE Standby Power at the Oakville Water Purification Plant Town of Oakville B a ck gro u n d Halton Region completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Study for the purpose of increasing the Oakville Water Purification Plant (WPP) capacity from 109 million litres per day (ML/d) to 130 ML/d in November, 2016. Halton Region also undertook a separate, stand-alone study considering the additional risk to security of water supply related to primary power interruptions. The Study consisted of a system-wide risk assessment to determine the need to implement a standby power system at the Oakville WPP. A Public Information Centre (PIC) was held on June 9, 2016 for the Class EA. Additional information on the stand-alone standby power system was presented at the same time. The recommendation presented at the PIC was to implement some form of standby power to address the risk of customers being out of service due to short-term loss of power, which could include the use of a portable generator, a service agreement or a permanent on-site solution. M&BY STt ST. JAMES ELEMENT ARVl SCHOOL LAKESHORE ROADI fra LAKE ONTARIO OAKVILLE WATERPURIFICATION PLANT Th e Preferred So lu tio n The preferred solution is to install a permanent on-site generator. This option provides reliability and redundancy of power as well as security of the water supply. The preferred solution is to install the generator within the footprint of an existing building on-site. This option will limit the requirements for excavation, reduce construction traffic and will be quieter and less visible for the community over the long term when compared to an outdoor installation.
