The stained-glass windows, which are original, were recently refurbished through the Town of Oakville's Heritage Fund, says MacPherson, adding that none of the windows were ever broken over the years. "It' s built like a castle," adds MacPherson. In 1925, the Palermo church became part of the United Church of Canada. The current pastor is Reverend Charlie Hogg and Marion Ferguson is chair of the church council. MacPherson says the most senior congregant is Myrtle Tovell, who recently turned 98. She grew up on a farm on Third Line when it was a gravel road and the QEW Highway didn' t exist. In days gone by, MacPherson said the church, which has a beautiful view of the lake and escarpment, used to host picnics, with people coming from all over the area. "It' s a great spot." The church is now home to community groups, such as the SENACA Seniors Day program, held five days a week, and the United Pentecostal Fellowship of Canada, which uses the building every Sunday at 2 p.m. We're one of the buildings that was here in the beginning. The church holds services every Sunday, attracting about 25 to 40 people. "We still have weddings here," MacPherson adds. The church hosts Saturday night dinners and is well known for its pie auctions. "We have a lot of fun," adds MacPherson.
