D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, December 6, 2000 l Hurd leads strong Oakville showing x at World Cup event in Edmonton By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Oakville swimmers managed to make some waves at the World Cup swimming event in Edmonton over the Nov. 18/19th weekend, including a gold medal. Andrew Hurd, in his OAC year at Oakville Trafalgar High School, won the gold medal in the 1500 metre freestyle event in a time of 15:23.91 seconds. Second place went to an Italian competitor, Andrea Righi, in 15:38.89. Hurd, who just turned 18 in August, is Canada's two-time 1500 metre champion and represented Canada at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Hurd also competed in the 400m freestyle, settling for second place in a near deadheat at 3:58.89. Fellow Canuck Brian Johns edged him out in 3:58.57. Hurd swims out of the Mississauga Aquatic Club under longtime coach Mark Temple after being introduced to the sport through the Oakville Aquatic Club's Olympic Way program. Sydney Olympian Andrew Hurd The OAC, at that time was geared more for sprinters. And although, they're trying to shake that label, club members did put in some awful good sprints in Edmonton. Rehab is over for Laura Pomeroy In particular, Q.E. Park student Laura Pomeroy, only 16 and coming off a serious shoulder injury which kept her out of action most of last year, not only made a final swim in the 50 metre freestyle sprint, but she nearly hit the podium with a fourth-place fin ish in a sizzling 25.84 seconds (the meet was won by Slovakian competi tor Martina Moravcova in 24.97 sec onds). "We're definitely on track with that (the injury)," said Oakville Aquatic Club head coach Lucie Hewitt Henderson. "We're still pretty cau tious, but in terms of recovery she's certainly come a long way." Pomeroy made two other finals. Showing her versatility she finished in fifth place in the 50m breaststroke in 32.84 seconds (the meet was won by a German competitor in 31.30 seconds). And she finished in eighth place in the 100m freestyle with a time of 57.98 seconds (it was won by a Slovakian competitor in a time of 54.24 seconds). "It was Laura's first world cup cir cuit meet, so I think given her first introduction to that kind of level she did outstandingly," said Oakville Aquatic Club head coach Lucie Hewitt Henderson. "She really settled in and did a real good job challenging the guys that beat her. Certainly she was excited swim ming next to Martina (Moravcova). "Laura said, `I had her until the turn' (half the race). "So she was pretty excited about racing that calibre of swimmer. And certainly to get the opportunity in the finals with all three swims was pretty exciting." Also making a final swim -- actu ally in the same 100m free race where Pomeroy finished eighth -- was long time Oakville Aquatic Club member Anna Lydall, now with the University of British Columbia. She finished in sixth place (57.03 seconds). Another longtime Oakville Aquatic Club grad, Sandy Henderson, now suiting up for Simon Fraser University also made a coveted final swim, finish ing in 7th place in the 50m backstroke in 26.61 seconds. The event was won by an Australian athlete in 24.52 sec onds. Last weekend the World Cup circuit stopped in Shanghai, China, but there were no Oakville competitors involved. The Oakville contingent largely consists of White Oaks students with one Blakelock student. Leading the way were veterans Mike Kucan of White Oaks and Kevin Stewart of Blakelock, both with gold in the men's open division. Kucan won all four of his matches in the double elimination style tourna ment, culminating with a 10-point superior win (matches are concluded if one wrestler gains a lead of 10 or more points) in the gold medal match. Stewart blew through his weight class with three 10-point superior wins. He did not concede a single point for the entire tournament. White Oaks' Mike Kalata earned a silver medal, winning three matches before losing a tough gold medal bout. In the rookie division, Mehrbod Estaki was outstanding, winning all four of his matches. He won the gold medal match over teammate Tyler Quenelle, who was also previously undefeated, and who earned silver. Tommy Ferrone also wrestled well, winning a silver medal. In other results, Matt Murray and B randan Generalovic each finished fourth; Alex Heaslip and Ryan Adams each fifth. In the wom en's division, both Flynn Bevan and Sophie Sevatos each finished fourth. "This is a high caliber tournament and any time you win medals it's good, but six suggests we're on the right track, especially when both rookies and veterans are winning," said head coach Tim Patterson. "That's a good mix for a coach to have." , Alex Calhoun Alex joined the Oakville Beaver circulation department as a district representative a few months ago. As a district representative.
