That's because for every dollar invested into H alton's Healthy Community Fund, $3.22 was lever aged in additional funding, in-kind donations and volunteer support, the Region's health and social services committee heard last week. The fund is the product of a series of partners banding together to make Halton a healthier community by fund ing worthwhile projects. So far, about 300 partners and 3,600 volunteers have helped leverage $3.5 million in in-kind services, volunteer support and added funding. Available dollars in the fund have increased by 97% since it's 1998 inception, reported project representa tive Joy Anderson. And requests for cash have almost doubled. "Certainly there's a need out there," said Anderson. In total, almost $900,000 was allocated over the three years to 66 projects. O f those, 26 are to be spread over more than one year. "You can see we're giv ing out quite a bit of money," said Anderson. The majority of the fund ed projects involved Haltonwide healthy living initia tives. About 43% were slated for youth or children's activ ities. ' Groups less typically funded include arts and environmental organiza tions, said Anderson. And that was just fine by Oakville M ayor Ann Mulvale. Since funding those groups, is meant to take place at the local level, offering Regional help could be seen as double-dipping, she said. "W hen I'm told arts groups and environmental groups aren't coming to the table, I'm not sure they should be," said Mulvale. Burlington Councillor Jack Dennison wondered whether the funding should be there at all. "Three or four years ago, I thought we got out of social services grants," he said. "But it seems we've just renamed it." But the benefits of the funding partnership out weigh the costs, said Mulvale. "We're actually putting in fewer dollars than we used to," she said. "And I think relationship building is extremely important." Halton Hills Councillor John Day said the fund has brought together groups that may not have thought of working together in the past. "It has been a very posi tive experience," he said. "There have been partner ships in areas I don't think we would have seen partner ships in otherwise." Those running the fund are still feeling their way through it, said Anderson. "I think there has been a lot of lessons learned," she said. "It has been a healthy experience, 1 think, for Halton."
