A8 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday December 13, 2000 'Big Pipe' completion means Milton ready to boom By Irene Gentle SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER T he new ly-unfettered journ ey along Regional Road 25 m ay have told the tale, but a visit to regional council Wednesday confirmed it -- H alton's big pipe project is largely completed. "A s o f M onday w e now have potable water," Jim D 'O razio o f D 'Orazio-W alter announced. "There are no leaks." The $27-million construction con tract was handled as a design-build project with D 'Orazio-W alter, and funded by developers. Construction began in January. The concrete pipe will pum p treat ed lake water to M ilton to allow for the development o f 6,200 new homes and 500 to 700 acres o f employment land. The town is expected to grow to a population o f 85,000 by 2016. A second w astew ater pipe was built simultaneously. Final testing o f a pumping' station is now in progress, but the job, which snarled traffic for m onths along Regional Road 25 despite best efforts to keep it flowing, is for all intents and purposes complete. "The system is actually function al," said D 'Orazio. "W e're not 100%, but w e're 99 per c e n t" Originally, the pipe's completion, jokingly referred to as "the first flush," was expected by October. But Halton Chair Joyce Savoline didn't begrudge the slight delay. "Jim is being modest," she told council. "W hat he didn't tell you was it was a 15- month project. H e finished it in 10 months, so congratulations." 1' Thai paw m these m m g»!
