The call has gone out for 2001 O n t a r i o Volunteer Service Award and Outstanding Achievement Award nomina tions. Part of the Ontario govern ment's bid to sup port the voluntary sector, the awards recognize both individuals and groups. Earlier this year, more than 5,000 volun teers were acknowledged at 31 ceremonies across the province. Next year has been proclaimed the International Year of Volunteers by the United Nations G e n e r a l Assembly. The Volunteer Service awards honour individ ual volunteers for continuous years of service to a single organiza tion, which can nominate up to six recipients each year. T h e Outstanding Achievement Awards highlight volunteerism of an outstanding calibre rather than years of ser vice contributed to a group. Twenty recipients are selected annually by a committee. "Every year Ontario's volun teers give hun dreds of millions of hours of their time to thousands of organiza tions," said Helen Johns, Minister of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation.
