Hosted by the Oakville Museum in partnership with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH), this special event com memorates Aug. 1, 1834; the day slavery was abolished in Canada and throughout the British Em pire. Oakville' s Emancipation Day Event dates back to 1850 when African Canadians from across the nation would gather at George' s Square in honour of their journey to freedom. "Our town played an important role for those who escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad," Mayor Rob Burton said in a media release. "This celebration is an impor tant reminder of our past and re flects Oakville' s rich heritage. We are proud to be part of this annual tradition." Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and pack a picnic lunch to enjoy while they watch performances by JUNO award winning reggae artist Sonia Collymore, the Hope Centre Gospel Choir, Oakville Wind Orchestra (OWO) Jazz Saxophone Quartet and interactive drumming circles with Rhythmic by Nature. Children can enjoy crafts and games all afternoon. The Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate is located at 8 Navy St. in downtown Oakville and is easily accessible by foot, bike or public transit. For more information on this event or other Oakville Museum programs and activities, call 905 338-4400 or visit oakville.ca/museum. Please do not stack plastic cups in the Blue Box or stack paper cups in the Green Cart-- stacking makes the cups too difficult to process.
