Swim to Survive is a FirstOntario Credit Union-sponsored training program, primarily aimed at teaching children the essential skills needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. "Drowning is the second leading cause of preventable death for children under 10 and learning basic swimming skills is incredibly important," said Renee Kulinski-McCann, program supervisor of Aquatics and Fitness. "We're proud to host this program so that children in Oakville can learn how to be safer and smarter in the water." The Swim to Survive program took place during May and June at all five of the Town' s indoor pools as well as Brookdale outdoor pool. The program is led by the Lifesaving Society and teaches participants how to roll into deep water, tread water for one minute and swim 50 metres. Town staff said more than 12,000 Oakville children have completed the Swim to Survive program since 2007 and note that number continues to grow. "We reinvest our profits in the communities we serve because we believe investing in people brings the highest returns," said James Lefebvre, senior vice president for Member Experience and Business Services with FirstOntario Credit Union. "We're proud to sponsor the swim program and provide the opportunity for education, awareness and practice of this essential life skill for kids in the Oakville community" The Town offers a number of aquatics programs and activities focused on water safety and drowning prevention including the Tifesaving Society Swim for Fife Program, which is available at all Town pools.
