3 9 | Thursday August 10, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insidehalton.com Pakmen duo wins U 18 provincial beach crown Oakville's Thomas Williams teamed up with Missis sauga' s Avi Bath to win the under-18 provincial beach volleyball championship at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto recently. Williams, 16, and Bath, 17, play club volleyball for Mis sissauga' s Pakmen. Both are part of the club' s elite beach training program. It' s the first time the two have played as a pair in beach volleyball as their regular partners were not available for the late-July tournament. Their beach coach Jessy Satti made the suggestion that the pair should combine their talents for provincials. Bath and Williams never lost a game throughout the two-day tournament despite being tested several times. It' s the first provincial beach volleyball title for Wil liams and the third for Bath. Williams will compete in the national beach volley ball championships in Ottawa later this month with his regular partner. In indoor volleyball, the two have played together for the past three years, helping Pakmen win national championships in 2015 and 2016. Williams plays high school volleyball at Loyola while Bath attends Mississauga Secondary School. Six Nations bounces back to edge Rock in Gam e 2 The Oakville Rock had a chance to regain the series lead Tuesday night after Six Nations squared the Ma jor Series Lacrosse semifinal 1-1 last Thursday. Six Nations recorded a 14-11 victory over the Rock, which took the series opener in triple over time. Trailing 10-8 in the third period, the Rock got goals from Eric Fannell and Brett Hickey 75 seconds apart to tie the game. After neither team could score in the final 12 minutes, the teams went to overtime for the second straight game. Six Nations took the lead in the opening minute but Oakville' s Stephan Leblanc tied the game 26 sec onds later. Six Nations regained the lead a minute later and the Chiefs added two late empty-net goals to seal the victory. Hickey had two goals and three assists, Berg scored twice and set up two more and Mitch Desnoo and Fannell also scored twice. Jeremy Noble had a goal and three assists, Leblanc had two helpers to go with his goal and Bradley Kri had the other Oakville goal. Nick Rose made 44 saves. Tuesday' s third game was held after the Beaver press deadline. The series returns to Oakville for Game 4 tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m. at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre. Minor rookie ball Bulls edge Hamilton to take Mississauga tournament Two 4-0 teams clashed for the gold medal at the Mississauga Southwest Baseball Associa tion (MSBA) AAA minor rookie ball tourna ment. The Burlington Bulls and Hamilton Cardi nals both defeated the other four AAA teams in the tournament. Since the round-robin game between the two teams couldn't be played when the tour nament started because of an unplayable field, it was later decided that the two 4-0 teams would forgo the round-robin make-up game and play one game for the tournament championship. The Bulls, leading 18-16 in the last inning, had Keegan Ferguson on the mound facing a Hamilton batter representing the potential tying run with two out. When the Cardinal batter' s wicked liner was snagged by Ferguson, Burlington had its tournament championship. Oakville started the weekend with a 22 14 win over Barrie, followed by a 7-6 deci sion against Mississauga, a 16-6 win over Markham and a 15-7 victory over Scarbor ough. In addition to Ferguson, other members of the team include Christiano Palalas, Da vid Gosselin, Ethan Fisher, Ethan Maxwell, Greyson McEntee, Jacob Gregoire, Jacob Levene, Julian Vella, Kai Niejadlik, Lucas East wood, Mason Balinov and Will Youngblut.
