The event, which is being organized by the charity Home Suite Hope, is intended to raise awareness and funds to help single-parent families who are in crisis and living with the reality of homelessness. Each participant is asked to raise $ 1 ,0 0 0 or m ore to m eet a fundraising goal of $100,000. The Oakville-based Elome Suite Elope provides transitional housing to a growing homeless population in Elalton Region that needs support beyond what is provided by emergency shelter facilities. The charity provides long term refuge (average stay of up to 2 4 m onths) for lowincome, precariously-housed, single parent families so they can have the time necessary to stabilize their lives. Burton said he' s willing to spend one night sleeping in his car to help make people aware of the important w ork Elome Suite Hope performs. "I am doing this because I have witnessed firsthand the incredible success this program has with vulnerable people w ho need this program to get back on their feet and be productive and happy members of society," said Burton. "If m ore people know about this program m ore people will support it." Proceeds raised during the event will go toward housing, education, support and training for the comm unity' s m ost vulnerable families. Organizers point out that on any given night in Halton more than 7 5 0 families deal with being homeless. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton Firefighters need help to Fill the Boot The Oakville Professional Firefighters Association (O PFFA ) is holding a boot drive for Muscular Dystrophy (MD) Canada on Saturday (Sept. 23). Oakville firefighters will attempt to break their previous fundraising records by asking residents to fill a boot the firefighters will have with them with donations The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m ., at three locations including: the W alm art located at 2 3 4 Hays Blvd., the Fortinos at 173 Lakeshore Rd., W , and the Longo' s at the Riocan Centre Burloak. "September is Muscular Dystrophy Awareness M onth and our mem bers are eager to answer M uscular Dystrophy Canada' s `9 1 1 ' call for assistance to raise funds and awareness to support people with neuromuscular disorders," said a media release from the OPFFA. "Muscular Dystrophy Canada is supported by m ore than 8 0 0 Fire Departments and Associations w ho consistently raise m ore than $ 3 million each year, making firefighters Muscular Dystrophy Canada' s largest network of supporters."
