That' s the thinking behind a Parents Reaching Out (PRO) grant of $125,019 to 125 Halton schools for the 2017/18 school year announced this morning by Halton MPP Indira NaidooHarris at Boyne Public School. Funds will allow schools to host things like family math nights, workshops for newcomer parents, active kid intramurals and other supports for learning in school, she said. The grants support local school councils, parent involvement committees, and non-profit organizations working with parents in creating local solutions that help parents overcome barriers to getting more involved in their children's learning. The school council of Boyne Public School is receiving the funds to provide parents with tools and information to support their children's learning. Naidoo-Harris said studies show that when parents are more engaged in their children's education, students are more likely to earn higher grades, have better behaviour and social skills and continue their education at a higher level. Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris "Parents are an amazing resource," NaidooHarris said. "This is great news for students, staff and parents. Strengthening parental involvement is key to helping students succeed. "It creates engaged students, engaged families and engaged communities." She said that parent involvement in their children's education is part of the province's plan to create jobs, grow the economy and help people in their everyday lives. In total, the province invested in 2,670 schools, supporting 119 regional and province wide projects.
