The festival begins on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (Q EP C C C ) with the feature presentation taking place from 7 to 8 :3 0 p.m. The festival resumes on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Oakville Museum for a tour of Under ground Railroad sites from 10 to 11: 30 am. The festival is presented by the Canadian Carib bean Association of Halton in partnership with the Oakville Museum and Sheridan College and includes performances by renowned artists, an educational seminar and an African drumming circle. RO O TS OF FR EED O M Participants from Oakville and area Participants include artists, volunteers, local re sources and citizens from various sectors of Oakville and Region of Halton. The focus of this festival is on local Black history and heritage within the context of the diaspora and impact of slavery, an important part of Oakville's his tory of which many people don't know about. Participants will gain a better knowledge of the slave trade, its impact and legacy, while generating pride and awareness of the contributions of the early Black com m unity who settled in the Oakville area via the Underground Railroad. This year, Karolyn Smardz Frost will be the feature book Steal Away Home, capturing the harrowing story of a 15-year-old escaped slave who slips away to freedom in Canada. Since its inception in 2 0 0 7 , the Canadian Carib bean Association of Halton and the Oakville Muse um have worked together to grow this festival into a truly distinctive event. Funding has been provided in part by Canadian Heritage. The two-day festival is open to the general public. Admission is free for everyone on Friday, Oct. 27, although donations will be accepted. However, there will be a fee for Saturday, Oct. 28, for 18-years and older. People can register for the tour at Oakville.ca/museum. The cost is $ 1 1. 2 8 with tax.
