Jones started his athletic ca reer in cross-country running at Pinegrove Public School and later Queen Elizabeth Park High School. He credits Olympic gold medal triathlete Simon Whitfield as the reason he wanted to compete in the sport after watching Whitfield upset the field on the way to the gold in the 2 0 0 0 Games. After winning the Canadian ju nior triathlon championship in 2 0 0 3 , Jones moved to Victoria, B.C. to train with Whitfield and the national team in 2005. The highlight year of his career was in 2 0 1 2 when he won his first Canadian senior triathlon champi onship and represented Canada at the Olympics in London. Also spotlighted for a recogni tion award by Sport Oakville was long-time Oakville resident Bill Sharp, who celebrated his 50th an niversary with wife Gail this year as well his 80th birthday. A skilled racer in singles and crew boats, Sharp was a coach and mentor and a multi-decade cham pion and promoter of water sports. Sharp founded the Oakville Racing Canoe Club, which later in New Zealand. In 2 0 1 6, he and friends took up open-ocean racing in the south Pa cific, medalling in Vaka Eiva and M otu-to-M otu 12-mile iron crew and 36-m ile change-crew races, respectively. There was also long distance racing near C ook Islands and spring racing in Rarotonga and Aitutaki.
