Burloak Canoe Club's Pennyfather wins three medals at Pan Am Sprint Canoe championships Each year since she joined the Burloak Canoe Club, the national cham pionships have marked the end of the racing season for Kate Pennyfather. W ith the sum mer over, time on the water m eant a switch from focusing on speed to building endurance by paddling long dis tances. Those long distances were again part of Pennyfather' s O ctober schedule, but this time it was to continue her racing season. Two weeks ago, the 15-year-old teamed up w ith Nova Scotia' s Marlee M acintosh to earn three medals at the Sprint Canoe Pan Am erican Championships in Ecuador. On the second day of the event, they took the gold medal in the C-2 1 ,000-metres. "That was a good start to the com petition," Pennyfather said. "It definitely made it a lot better pad dling with som eone I knew." Pennyfather and M acintosh made their international debuts com peting together at the world ju n ior cham pionships in Romania in Ju ly where they finished 12th (2 0 0 m ) and 14th (5 0 0 m ). They extended their season with the Pan Am erican cham pionships, where they also won silver medals in the 500m and 200m events. "It was a lot different (compared to other seasons), but I took some time off after nationals to recover from the season and recharge," said the Oakville Trafalgar High School student.
