Two months later, they have been replaced with exclama tion marks. Ava Heitkamp scored with two minutes left in overtime as the Eagles edged Nelson 1-0 to claim the Hal ton Secondary School Ath letic Association junior held hockey title, the school's first Tier 1 title in the sport. One of the biggest unknowns heading into the season was who would tend net for Ab bey Park after last year's goalie moved up to the senior ranks. Emma Hardcastle, a Grade 10 student who didn't make last year's junior team, came back this year trying to secure a spot in a new position. The first-time goalie played like a veter an, keeping the Eagles in every game. Her shutout against Nelson in the final was her sixth in a row. In fact, Hardcastle allowed ju st one goal all season, in a 1-1 tie with Garth Webb. "She was phenomenal," said Megan Welsh, who coached the Eagles with Paul Dick. "She had great instincts and she was not afraid to dive to stop a shot. In one of our (playoff) games, the coach from the other team said she made the save of the year." And there wasn't a lot of room for error. Abbey Park also won its semifinal over M.M. Robinson with the team's leading scorer Lau ren Davies providing the game's only goal. After an undefeated (4-0-2) regular sea son, Abbey Park topped Georgetown 2-0 in the quarter-finals. Davies and Ava Heitkamp each had a goal in the win. Though that duo produced all of Abbey Park's scoring in the playoffs, Jillian Trim ble, Amber King and Sam Ecclestone were also reliable sources of offence during the season. An all-Grade 9 midfield of Ecclestone, Sam Osterback, Maddyx Lindsay and Olivia Hledin also played a key role in Abbey Park's success, helping on defence as well as quick ly moving the ball up the field. After going 2-4-1 last season, Welsh said the Eagles' win in the season-open ing Hayden Huskies tournament gave the coaches a good indication they had a strong team. Even more impressive was how the team performed in recording wins on turf over Nelson and Hayden, last year's Halton final ists. "We have a grass field so the ball moves a lot slower," Welsh said. "On turf, you have to pick up the pace and be able to predict where the ball is going.
