Sheridan advises students fall term may carry over to 2 0 1 8 by M arta Marychuk Oakville Beaver Staff P With the strike by academic employees at Ontario's 24 colleges now into its fourth week, Sheridan College is advising its students the fall term m ay need to carry over to January 2018 and to refrain from making travel plans the week of Dec. 18 to 22. The academic staff on strike includes -- college faculty counsellors and librarians. All classes remain cancelled for Sheridan's full-time and part-time students, while the majority of continuing education classes continue to run. Depending on the length of the strike, Sheridan College says it m ay be possible that part of the fall term m ay need to carry over to January 2018, according to a media release. Sheridan College m ay need to use the week of Dec. 18 to 22 to make up for lost days of instruction. No classes Dec. 23-Jan. 1 However, the college has committed that no classes will run during the period of Dec. 23 to Jan. 1 inclusive. With that in mind, Sheridan College has asked students to refrain from booking travel during this period if they had not done so before Oct. 30 when the announcement was made. At the start of the strike, Sheridan cancelled all field placement activities. It has since been determined that Sheridan has the requisite staff to support students' learning in the field placements of several programs. The following field placements will restart as early as Nov. 6: kinesiology all semesters; vet tech, semester 1; practical nursing, semester 3; athletic therapy, off cam pus placements; investigations-public and private, semester 3; community and justice services, semester 3; and, paralegal, semester 4. Sheridan's cam puses remain open with m any services and supports running, including tutoring, library access, a number of workshops and access to m any laboratories for independent learning. 72 hours' notice No exam s will be scheduled and no assignments will be due during the strike, nor will any be due for 72 hours (including weekends) following the announcement that the strike has ended.
