There appears to be lots of interest from parents and students about the future educational framework of Aldershot High School in Burlington. W hat shape that change should take is the next step in the school' s pending transformation. The Halton District School Board hosted an open house recently in Burlington, attracting about 70 people. They had a chance to talk to senior board administrators and offer their input on what themes or courses a newlyimagined Aldershot H.S. should consider offering. The term Tnagnet school' has been used for Aldershot signifying an educational facility that would draw students from across Halton and beyond the region. Aldershot H.S. principal Maria McTellan was at the open house as well as Terri Blackwell, the co ordinating superintendent who is shepherding the Aldershot Exploration Committee. The committee consists of more than a dozen members including Aldershot H.S. administrators, staff and students, multiple board superintendents and the elected trustee for the ward, Teah Reynolds. The Aldershot High School Focus Exploration was one of the recommendations approved by trustees last June related to the 10-month study of secondary program and accommodation in Burlington. "We have received many submissions for the creation of an innovative high school concept to serve Halton and beyond and we are very excited about the possibilities," said Blackwell. She told open house attendees 216 responses were received from parents, students, board staff and community members in Halton and beyond through an online suggestion box. The 15 themes were generated by the online public input. Suggested themes to be incorporated in a new Aldershot school include an Innovation/ Technology Hub, Health and Wellness, E n v iro n m e n ta l/E c o Focus, Entrepreneurship/ Business Innovation Hub, School for Human Arts, Financial Literacy, Alternative Calendar School, High Performance Athletic Program, School for Visual and Performing Arts, and a STEM/STEAM/ STREAM school focusing on a combination of science, technology, robotics, engineering, arts and math. Aldershot currently is a traditional high school that also offers two ministry of education-approved Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program -- the Royal Botanical Gardens ECO Studies program and the Health and Wellness: Focus on Fitness - CANFIT Program. A relatively new student to Aldershot H.S. attended the open house and said she has many interests, in the arts, math and sciences. "I'm a gamer," Samantha Howie said of her passion for video games. The Grade 11 student came to Aldershot part way through Grade 10 via the arts program at Alexander Mackenzie H.S. in Richmond Hill. She likes the STEAM concept (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) emphasizing that the arts are important. see Submit on p.39
