Cheers erupted from the audience Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the regular meeting of the board when, for the second time in less than a year, trustees rejected the phase-out of the popular program. "This motion should have been dealt with one year ago and I'm sorry that our community had to deal with this once again," said Oakville trustee Paul Marai. Nineteen delegations -- the majority frustrated parents -- presented to the board two weeks ago appealing to trustees to vote down a Paul Marai, Oakville recent ad hoc committee's recommendation to scrap EFI. The committee was formed in the wake of trustees' decision last December to reject the same staff recommendation, and came to the same conclusion that the five-year EFI pilot offering should be eliminated. The committee recommended instead, continuing with the Extended French (EF) program, which begins in Grade 5. Marai's motion to make the HCDSB four-school EFI program permanent and have staff provide trustees with a multi-year recruitment plan, was almost unanimously approved. "The community obviously overwhelmingly supports specialized programming like French immersion," said Marai. "We have to make a commitment to provide services in demand by our community and we have to produce students that will contribute to our future economy; Early French Immersion will do that."
