www.insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 30, 2017 | 14 Charge laid in kitchen designer scam A 42-year-old Oakville man is facing 12 fraudrelated charges in connection with an alleged kitchen designer scam. In 2016 and 2017, police say, 11 clients contracted the business Oakville Kitchen Designers to carry out renovations to their kitchens. After the clients provided significant deposits, officers allege, the specified renovations were left substantially incomplete with several victims stuck with a partially renovated kitchen or a kitchen that had cabinets and sinks removed. Another alleged incident involved a transaction at a bank. In total, police allege the clients and the bank were scammed out of around $400,000. The Halton Police Fraud Bureau was contacted and after an investigation spanning several months an arrest was made. John Anthony Vanderkolk, 42, of Oakville is charged with 12 counts of fraud over $5,000. Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Det. Const. Alicia Gibson of the Halton Police Fraud Unit at 905-825-4747, ext. 8739 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). "Every board across the province is dealing with this issue and still today, there is no concrete action plan or communication by the ministry," said Marai, who has previously said he believes EFI to be one of the most popular programs in Ontario. EFI is another educational opportunity for students, and should continue, said Halton Hills trustee John Mark Rowe. "We've been heading that way with such programs as IB (International Baccalaureate) ... Hiring problems come and go over time and I think it's important that we continue that program (EFI) because it gives us a variety of options for our variety of students," said Rowe. Making EFI a permanent offering would also strengthen parents' commitment to the board, said Marai, in reference to the number of parents who said they would switch to the (Halton) public board should the Halton Catholic board's EFI program be eliminated. A motion by Oakville trustee Anthony Danko to continue transportation for EFI students and make both EFI and French immersion strategic priorities was also approved. EFI is offered at four schools: St. Benedict (Milton), Sacred Heart of Jesus (Burlington), St. Brigid (Halton Hills) and St. Mary (Oakville).
