T he premiere Standing Tall Fashion Show, a charity event held on behalf of Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House in Oakville, raised more than $25,000 to support programming and services that aid people living with cancer. More than 200 people attended the sold-out event at Kennedy Ford Dealership on Nov. 11. Models included 11 cancer survivors, who took the spotlight to celebrate survivorship, serve as inspiration to others currently undergoing treatment, and draw attention to the important work of Wellspring. Ceilia Bai, the Standing Tall Fashion Show committee director said, "Local Oakville businesses and volunteers, including students from Oakville Trafalgar High School, contributed donations and time to make the night a shining success. The room was full of love and support for cancer survivors and for Wellspring. We are so pleased to shine a light on Wellspring and its vital service to the people with cancer living in the Halton Region." Taking a few sashays and poses on the catwalk, Judy Williamson, one of the evening's models, and a cancer survivor, said, "Wellspring is an incredible support organization located Fashion show is a runway success for Wellspring be an inspiring, positive role model for others." Local food businesses, including Pusateri's Fine Foods, Mye Japanese Restaurant, Kerr Street Café & Catering, and Seasons Restaurant, donated and served a range of sumptuous cuisine. Local clothing retailers, including Boa Boutique, Kit and Ace, Burrows Clothiers, Tocca Finita, Lemonwood Cashmere, Corbetts Ski + Snowboard, Black Caviar and Island View, outfitted the models in more than 30 designs on display. Funds were raised from Standing Tall Fashion Show ticket sales, silent auction items, draw items, as well as sales from pop-up shop local retailer, Lemonwood Cashmere. In addition, Kennedy Ford Dealership and Ford Motor Company of Canada raised funds from test drives of Ford vehicles the day of the event. Claudia Connor, events manager with Wellspring, thanked the Standing Tall Fashion Show committee, sponsors and volunteers, and took time to share where the funds would support Wellspring. "The focus at Wellspring is on the person, not the disease. Wellspring provides a safe and confidential place where people living with cancer, their families and caregivers, can network with others in similar situations, can access experts, learn coping strategies, gain practical support and share knowledge."
