"Based on the size of the charity, we distribute in a couple of different ways. For the big ones that have a gym or facil ity, they give us the bulk numbers of how many kids they are serving and we will deliver in bulk to them. For some of the smaller ones, they will give us a wish list for each child and we will pack something and deliver it direct to them." If the agency involved asks, the firefighters will drop off the toys with a fire truck and in full uniform.The reaction of the children in those instances can be overwhelming, says Merriman. "A lot of the time the kids are not expecting any thing and their caregivers have told them there may not be anything for Christmas. So they are pretty excited when we arrive," he said. "The caregivers too, a lot of the times they are in tears because they work with these kids the whole year round and they are pretty excited to see the kid they are caring for receive something." In addition, the firefighters pay an annual visit to the hospital to deliver gifts to patients, young and old. While Merriman said the need in the community was greater this year, he noted donations were greater too. He said the toy drive still fell short on gifts for infants and teens, but came closer to meeting that need than ever before.
