Wednesday, September 15, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C7 AUTOMOTIVE Ford takes 2000 m odel year m essage to dealership employees The first thing Ford of Canada is changing about its 2000 model-year cars and trucks is the way it introduces them to the men and women who sell and service them. For the first time ever, Canada's #2 automaker is inviting thousands of dealer ship employees -- from the showroom to the service.bay -- to attend its annual new- model introduction meetings. It's also the first time this decade that the glitz and glamour of the new-model introduction festivities are happening at home in Canada. In Toronto last week, more than 3,000 employees from more than 150 dealerships throughout Ontario piled into the Metro Toronto Convention Centre over three days. During that time the: □ Saw more than a dozen all-new cars and trucks ringing in the second millenni um of the automobile, and signalling what's ahead in terms of design, safety, and versatility. □ Sampled some of the new opportuni ties Ford is creating for dealerships to grow their businesses -- from improving their used car sales to starting a driving school. □ And, most importantly, for Ford of Canada CEO Bobbie Gaunt, left with a healthy dose of her prescription for success heading into the new century. Gaunt hoped the meetings would build knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment among the front-line sales and service force. She was also there to listen. "If we are to truly connect with our customers, we must first ensure we're connecting with each other. These meetings are about building first-hand knowledge, which is essential to building understanding, com mitment and the kind of strong, lifelong relationships we want with our cus tomers." In the past, ringing in the new model year has meant inviting just dealer princi pals to attend the U.S. launch (this year, in Philadelphia) and making special Canadian presentations there. Typically, only half of Ford of Canada's 577 dealers attended. Instead, this year's events, held in six Canadian cities in six weeks, will reach more than 12,000 dealership employees, as well as all Ford of Canada employees -- all with a stake in the company's success. It's also a command performance for most of the company's senior leadership team, who will spend Monday-thru-Fridays on- the-road for the six weeks. But there comes a time when you absolutely must get new ones. Tires are man ufactured with a wear bar that appears when there is less than l.6mm (l/l 6th inch) of tread remaining. At this point, replace ment is impera- tive-your tires are history. Totally worn out. Driving on them is haz ardous, especially in the rain. You don't, however, have to wait this long. Some tire retailers offer trade in values for tires that still have some life in them. Once you've decided to replace your existing tires, it's impor tant to chose new ones with similar characteristics (ie. size, load carry ing capacity, and speed rating). Consult a tire spe cialist to select the tires that best fit your vehicle, your driving style, and local road condi tions. Radial tires have less rolling resistance than bias ply, and are therefore more economical: they help cut down on gas expenses. They also offer better handling and more durabil ity. One thing to remember: it's generally unsafe to mix bias ply and radial tires.
