The long running elite tournament is dedicated to the memory of Mike Cannon, the first travelling secretary of the Toronto Blue Jays and a long time resident of Oakville who quietly supported minor baseball in the community and followed the game with a passion where ever it was played. Several major league and college scouts make this a must-attend tournament, as it allows them a place where they can scout Canadian talent and gives them a better look at how players have progressed through the summer and also provides information for the draft. This year, the 12-team Cannon Cup will take place Friday through Sunday (Sept. 17-19) with the headquarters for the tourna ment at Oakville Park, which was the origi nal practice park for the 1997 Toronto Blue Jays. The opening ceremonies will be held at Oakville Park at 5 p.m. with all teams marching onto the field. Jen Lennon will sing the national anthem and Mayor Ann Mulvale will say a few words followed by Oakville Minor Baseball Association (OMBA) president Doug Culham, Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) president Jack Middlemass and Central Ontario Baseball Association (COBA) president Bob Pleau. A skills competition will be held, spon sored by the Toronto Blue Jays, featuring a (See 'Cannon' page D4) September 20 - Discover Oakville's and Mississauga's number one Health, Fitness & Racquet facility Free Fitness and Aerobics Fitness/Aerobics Monday - Friday Over 50 aerobic, cycling or circuit classes for you to try.
