Wednesday, September 15, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 The Oakville Strikers nearly pulled off an upset against the favoured Burlington Flames in the U-15 Ontario Cup provincial championship final Saturday afternoon at the Ontario Soccer Association's Coffee Time Soccer Centre in Vaughan. Burlington did hold the edge in play and were full value for their 1-0 win, their lone goal, in the second half, by Kendal Bradbum coming off a comer kick. Karen Eade recorded the shutout. Burlington now moves on to the national championships in Edmonton the Thanksgiving weekend. The feisty Oakville squad did gener ate their own chances, in particular two glorious breakaway opportunities, the first one by Diana Servidio in the open ing minutes and the second one by Rebecca Carreiro in the closing min utes. "I thought we had our chances," agreed coach Komel Vuia. "We had two breakaways and we didn't put the ball in. They scored the goal on that comer kick -- what can I say. "I'm very proud of these girls. They played their hearts out as you can tell -- they (Burlington) just won 1-0. Burlington is a great team and I respect them. "They were the favourites but I thought we held our ground. I thought we played well. I thought we played a great game. "I'm proud of the girls. I think they did a fantastic job and we had winners all the way." Here's the roster for the Ontario Cup provincial finalists U-15 Oakville Strikers ... By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR A pair of goals by Karen Zmirak led the U-13 Oakville Cobras rep soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Waterloo Flames in the Ontario Cup provincial championship final Saturday afternoon. Played at the Ontario Soccer Association's Coffee Time Soccer Centre in Vaughan, it was the Oakville's team's second provincial championship in as many tries. "It's not old hat," assured coach Keith Halbert. "It's tough competition." Oakville took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on a highlight reel passing play. Jessica Povilaitis pushed it up to Stephanie Muldoon who fed a good pass to Zmirak just inside the penalty area. She pumped faked a defender then labeled it. Play was pretty even in the first half although Oakville had the slight edge in scoring chances. It was Waterloo that came out guns ablazing in the second half and their hard work resulted in the equalizer on the heels of some sustained pressure. Waterloo continued with the pressure, but couldn't get the go-ahead goal. Oakville bent but they did not break. Oakville rebounded on a surprise goal. Zmirak booted up a long-range knuckle ball that, in what seemed like slow motion, completed its perfect high arc between the goalie and the crossbar. Zmirak and the Cobras had to stare a few milliseconds before they realized what had happened. Just prior to that, Zmirak scored a disallowed goal when she bumped into the goalie causing the ball to spurt into the net. "It (the goal) was a half scissor kick," explained Zmirak after the game. Just like that they were Ontario Cup champs and it's something they're appar ently not getting tired of. "It feels great -- especially the second time," chimed in another excited teammate in the growing post-victory scrum. Coach Halbert gave kudos to Waterloo. "I thought they (Waterloo) played really well. We had to work really hard." Waterloo managed to get in some contact worthy of a hockey game, though the ref let them play on. Halbert said they knew going into the game that Waterloo were "bigger and stronger." "I thought our team's skill matched up quite well with that." His team's lowest point occurred after Waterloo potted the equalizer. "They had some momentum after they scored, and we had to hang in there," said coach Halbert. Zmirak's second and winning goal, however, changed the momen tum right back to Oakville. With their high level of fitness they were able to seal the deal.
