J u l i a D u m a n i a n , who has been the CEO for four years, has been appointed President of St. P e t e r ' s H o s p i t a l Julia Dumanian: Foundation and United Way Executive Vice- CEO off to Pres, of St. Hamilton Peter's Hospital in Hamilton. "This is a tremendous opportuni ty for Julia," said UWO Board Pres. John Vail. "After four years of suc cessful leadership in the Oakville Community, the City of Hamilton will benefit tremendously from her experience and visioning." The UWO learned of Dumanian's departure at their meet ing last week. During her tenure, Dumanian has been responsible for a 50% increase in revenue, dramatic decreases in costs, enhanced volun- teerism and continued promotion of the United Way and its 36 funded agencies, Vail said. "Although the Board will miss Julia Dumanian, they were united in wishing her every success in her new position," said Vail. - A search committee has already been formed under Vail and a pro fessional search agency is being retained. Anyone interested in the posi tion should contact Vail at 842-7783 or e-mail at sales@johnvail.com more. He explained that the formal "Bronte Creek Management Plan" con tains a wide variety of suggested changes to the park, but nowhere to be found in the blueprint is anything about the RCGA. Raccoon rabies threat real says MOH By Irene Gentle SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Old news is no news, says the Region's medical officer of health. That's why a serious raccoon rabies threat in Florida doesn't receive much attention in that state. "It is like any crisis. Once something happens all the time, it is almost accept able," Dr. Bob Nosal told Halton's health and social services committee, recently. "It is not news there anymore. It has already happened." But the strain that has moved steadi ly up the United States since the 1940s and is now poised to penetrate this area is big news here, he said. "It is because of the potential of what (See 'Rabies' page 2) Ontario A-G at Cdn. A 29-year old Hamilton man has been arrested and charged in connec tion with a series of recent bank rob beries from Oakville to Stoney Creek. Halton and Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Police took the man into cus tody on Monday. The first robbery occurred Aug. 20th at the Canada Trust at King Street and Plains Road in Burlington. The second occurred Aug. 26th at the North Service Road Scotiabank in Oakville. The third hold-up happened at the Royal Bank on King Street East in Stoney Creek. In the Oakville robbery, a man entered the bank, located at Oakville Town Centre I, and brandished a silver handgun. He ordered all employees and customers to the floor. The suspect then walked behind the counter and demanded cash from the tellers. p.m. in Stoney Creek. Jason Hugh Buick, of Cheevers Street in Hamilton, has been charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of point a firearm, three counts of wearing a disguise, three counts of forcible confinement and three counts of weapon dangerous. By Howard M ozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The grassroots push to keep Bronte Creek Provincial Park in its present con dition continued over the weekend when hundreds of signatures were added to a growing petition. Oakville's Moira Latham, a spokesperson for the Bronte Creek East Preservation Association, said she and other members were at the park gates again on Sunday gathering names for their protest. Together they received 400 more sig natures opposing golf or camping at the park, bringing the total number of names to more than a thousand. "People's comments were very favourable to us," said Latham. She explained that visitors to the park say they enjoy the site just as it is and that a golf course or a campground would ruin the eastern portion of the park "Golf or camping, people are horri fied," Latham added. Latham says the land in question - near Upper Middle and Bronte Roads - contains a wide variety of trees, an important archaeological site and other natural resources enjoyed by everyone from dog walkers to cross-country skiers. Camping or golfing, she says, flies in the face of the Management Plan's mandate to protect the resources of this "sanctu ary." Cars left for service then driven away Halton Regional Police are on the lookout for a pair of luxury cars after a break-in this week at a South Service Road dealership. According to investigators, the own ers of the cars dropped their vehicles off for service at Budd's Motors after the dealership closed on Sunday. The own ers parked on the lot then slid their keys into the drop-off slot in the door. The thieves pried open the bottom of the door to gain access to the keys then they stole the cars. Both vehicles are 1995 BMW 3181 two-doors in excellent condition. One was red with the licence WTL 014, the other black with licence 047 WXP. Each is valued at $30,000. Anyone with information is encour aged to contact police at 825-4777 or 634-1831 ext. 2215 or Crime Stoppers at 825-8477. At the centre of the controversy is the interest expressed by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) in transform ing an eastern poition of the park into a 45-hole national golf training centre. That area is part of a short list of six sites selected by the RCGA for their proposed facility. Last month, RCGA executive director Stephen Ross said his organization is looking to open a string of golf centres across the country to increase its pres ence using funds from the sale of Glen Abbey Golf Club. The RCGA'-headquarters, now at Glen Abbey, will remain at the future Metro Toronto site, wherever this is located - likely within 30 minutes of downtown Toronto. This fact, said Ross last month, will keep the Halton site in the running. According to park superintendent Paul deCourcy, the RCGA has only expressed interest at this point, nothing "Quaffty Licensed Character Merchandise" Free Anytime - Children Are Invited To Watch Their Favorite Cartoons And Play O ur 3 V ideo Games.
