Have you inherited a family heirloom. Found something around the house and always wondered about its value. Or, found a treasure at a garage sale and want to know what it's worth? Get the answers this Saturday at the Oakville Museum's Appraisal Day on Saturday Sept. I lth from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Appraisers Richard Browne and Carl Booth will examine items and provide written estimates of their worth, at a cost of $ 15 for the first item and $5 for every subsequent item. But please, no furs, coins, jewelry or stamps. And, what are some of the items that have been valued at previous Appraisal days? "We've done some antique cars," says Browne of Mississauga, who has participated in the museum's Appraisal Day for five years. "I've done violins - they're very hard to do because sometimes the bow is worth more than the violin. I usually send violins away to somebody else to be appraised because their such a specialty item." Other items include antique silver and china, Oriental pieces, carpets, pictures and oil paintings. "When it comes to family heirlooms, I find that people may have had them for sentimental reasons for a'long time but have never known their intrinsic value." The more expensive items he's appraised at the Oakville museum run anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000. "These could be rugs, paintings, or bronze sculpture. For example, a set of sterling silver flatware can run up to $10,000. If you have a 100-piece silver flatware set, valued at $100 a piece, than you've got a $10,000 set." Some silver tea sets can also be quite valuable, he added. "It's the variety of items that is the joy of doing these appraisals," concludes Browne, who donates his time to the museum for Appraisal Day. A professional appraisal, Browne travels across Canada from St. John's, NFLD., to Calgary or Edmonton, to does mostly contents appraisals in homes. "I work out of my home in Edmonton," he explains. "People usually don't come to me, I go to their homes." He calls his company Richard L. P. Browne Ltd. His specialties are antiques and fine art. He also works with galleries and museums across Ontario. The Oakville Museum's Appraisal Day has raised more than $3,000 over the past five years. For information, and to register, call the museum at 338- 4400. This weekend, Bronte Creek Provincial Park will at its best behavior as it hosts the Oakville & District Kennel Club's All-Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trails with more than 2,000 dogs and their handlers. The competition begins Friday and finishes on Sunday. The public is invited to watch the action ringside as hun dreds of entrants 'put on the dog.' Highlights will include less common breeds such as the Petit basset Griffon Vendeen, a large number of Burmese Mountain Dogs, and a few Portuguese Water Dogs. This is not an opportunity to display Spot, the family pet. "There will be more dogs than you can shake a stick at, so to speak," says Joan Ludlow, Bronte Creek's park clerk. "I'm, told there will also be a good selection of vendors so visitors can buy the latest in canine fashion." The park is located on Burloak Drive north of the QEW between Oakville and Burlington.
