Heartless people, homeless kittens By Karen Smith SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The organization in charge of animal control in Oakville has a large number of kittens on its hands in what the shelter manager calls the busiest time of year. The Oakville Humane Society is close to capaci ty with an influx of kittens and people giving up their pets, said shelter manager Johanne Golder. "We're very full," she said. "It's a busy time of year." With allergy season and people moving, the sum mer is prime time for pet owners to decide they can no longer keep their animals, Golder said. A number of cats were adopted from the shelter last weekend after the humane society was featured on City TV, however many more have since arrived. On Monday morning, staff found six kittens left at the front door. The kittens were in good health, how ever they're now homeless. The situation comes down to human irresponsi bility, she said. "What happens is people don't spay and neuter their cats and then let them out. Having the kittens around is okay for a while because the mother looks after them, but then they're ready to leave their moth er." People interested in adopting a pet from the shel ter are required to complete an application form. The cost to adopt a cat is $85, which includes spaying or neutering, initial vaccinations and a flea bath. The cost for a dog, which includes the same ser vices, is $107. The humane society is located on Cornwall Road, east of Trafalgar Road and south of the QEW. For more information, call 845-1551.
