22 Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, July 18, 1999 Youth leaders in the community Leaders in Training (LIT) at the Oakville YMCA had an active week in the community. LIT is a program at the YMCA of Oakville devoted to youths 13-16 years old promot ing leadership, self-esteem, team spirit and relationship building. Carolyn Mackintosh, the Director of the Summit Leadership LIT camps at the Y had the following to say: "We try to get the kids involved in the community as much as possible. Learning by doing results in improved self- esteem. And, these leaders of tomorrow are helping their community today." On Tuesday July 13, the LITs entertained a mature crowd gath ered at the YMCA for the weekly Meals to Wheels luncheon pro gram. Participants seventy years of age and older meet their peers for a delicious lunch served at the YMCA every Tuesday from 11:30 am to 2 pm. (Program fee is just $2.00.) POSTCARDS FROM CAMP Volunteer drivers pick up most of the participants and bring them to and from home. Y staff and volunteers, many from the Royal Bank Financial Group, host the seniors and provide leadership for the social events following lunch, which range from cards to bingo to special visitors. This past Tuesday, the LITs and their buddies, Y campers with special needs, provided the after lunch entertainment. One of the camp participants, Michelle Ireland delighted the seniors with her version of Dragon Fly'; a song taught to her by her special friend and LIT companion at camp. Songs, skits and presentations got everyone moving, and singing along with the LITs and their campers. The LITs continued their community work on Wednesday July 14, 1999 by hosting a car wash at the Esso gas station on the comer of Trafalgar Rd. and Cross Avenue. There was no cost for the wash, however donations were accepted. Funds raised will be used to provide fee assistance to families needing help to send a child to YMCA Day Camp. The 45 participants in the first session of Leadership Training programs at the YMCA and their facilitators Carolyn MacKintosh, and Leader Assistants, Quentin Budd and Alison MacRae were pleased to have collected $260 for this wor thy cause. Adapting to change This is a story about love, about adapting to change and about hope. The woman I spoke to did not want her real name used. For the sake of this article, we'll call her Flo. Her mother had always lived with her. This had never been a problem until a doctor's diagnosis of dementia -- a condition of diminished mental capacity to the point that constant care and super vision was required. Physical problems began much earlier, however, and in 1997 at 82 years of age, Flo's mother suffered from congestive heart failure. It was this incident which led the family to their first experience with the Red Cross. Following a stay at the hospital, Flo's mother was sent home. The hospital's home care program contacted the Red Cross to borrow badly needed medical equipment such as a walker, bed rail, and bath chair. While the equipment loan helped to address their immediate medical needs, the long-term solution for care still had to be addressed. After three months and further discussions with the doctor, Flo's mother faced a ter- <S> T O Y O T A SUNNY DAYS SALES EVENT [ w ith car tips to make summer driving more enjoyable ] a sunny day car tip: h o w to park in th e shade. close y o u r su n ro o fw /te n p a r lin ty in a s /ia rfe d a re a . In order to keep her mother with her, she would need to provide extensive stimu lation as a means to offset what she now realized was the onset of Alzeimers. To Flo, the choice was simple: "As long as there is a spark in her eye of recognition, I wanted her with me," she says. The family then heard about the S.E.N.E.C.A. Day Program. The pro gram offered social interaction with fun, themed activities such as gardening, pet interaction, and exercise. Lunch was included each day as well. Flo's mother began to go two days and, since last October, now goes three times a week. The difficulty, however, lay in trans portation. Flo worked shifts at the Toronto airport and her husband is self- employed. Their schedules made it near ly impossible to commit to the program which would make an incredible differ ence in the quality of their lives. Once again, the Red Cross was able to help. Now, three days a week, Flo's mother is picked up at her door and taken to the Oaklands Regional Centre where the S.E.N.E.C.A. program is held. The bus is more than transportation; it is part of the whole experience and Flo's mother waits with anticipation at the door. The Red Cross made it possible for Flo to keep her mother at home by pro viding a much needed service. Events such as the annual "Black Tie and Golf Shoes" raise money to support their efforts to make a difference in the lives of people of this community.
