4 By HOWARD MOZEL -,;] Oakville Beaver Staff ‘< When Rainer Noack came to St. Ignatius O of Loyola several years ago, he was deterâ€" mined to develop a Drama program from the roots up. With the recent success of the play Subway Breakdown at the Sears Drama Festival, it‘s obvious his efforts have blosâ€" somed. No one is more proud than Charles Pavia, the young Loyola playwright who â€" with Noack and company â€" nurtured Subway Breakdown from words on a page to a sucâ€" cessful production. He credits his onâ€"stage experience with helping to write a play which is actor friendly but â€" like Noack â€" tips his hat to the cast and crew. "In school we‘re not in the business of competition. We‘re in the business of educaâ€" tion," says Noack. "It‘s not so much winning as that the students are proud of what they do." "The one thing everyone has is spirit," says Noack, who lauded his students‘ willingâ€" ness to learn and to share. LEARNING EXPERIENCE After all, the world of theatre outside Loyola‘s walls is one that maintains a sense of community. Through Sears, Noack hopes to foster a similar understanding and so doing make the Drama program that much better. He admits competition "gets the blood boilâ€" ing" but is quick to point out that the ultimate goal of Subway Breakdown is to learn. In no way, however, does Noack take all the credit for "Subway" being one of three productions chosen to represent Halton in the upcoming Sears Regionals in Guelph. Instead, he has nothing but praise for the enthusiastic group of young people who rose to the occaâ€" sion and triumphed. In fact, the school also won the Halton Spirit Award â€" just as it has the past two years. This fact proves there is something special at work at Loyola which transcends a relative lack of experience and exposure to more established programs.
