Easter Egg Hunt ‘ROAR‘"â€"ed with 800 kids, huge food donation for FareShare By CHERYL ELLIOT Special to the North News Residents turned out in droves for the first River Oaks Association of Residents Easter Egg Hunt held at the River Oaks Recreation Centre on Sunday. About 800 children participated in the hunt, estimated Lesley Carnovale, ROAR‘s social commitâ€" tee chair. "We ran out of candy and had to buy more," she said. "We had a great turnout." _ Admission to the hunt was a nonâ€"perishable food donation for the Oakville FareShare foodbank. "The people came through for us," Carnovale said. "The foodbank estimated we got between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds of food." Local public officials also attended the hunt. Mayor Ann Mulvale, Councillors Liz Behrens and Sean Weir, and trustees Debbie Marklew and Gerry O‘Halloran picked out the 15 winners in the coloring contest. Carnovale said ROAR was indebted to the 12th Oakville Pathfinders and the Clowns in Christ from St. John‘s United Church for keeping the large crowd entertained. Police arrest rape suspect A 33â€"yearâ€"old Oakville man has been charged with raping a 20â€"yearâ€" old Oakville woman who was walkâ€" ing home from the video store in February, report the Halton Regional Police. Police arrested the suspect last Friday night. The attack occurred around 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7th when the 20â€" yearâ€"old Oakville woman was walkâ€" ing on a paved pathway under the QEW near Sixth Line. Police said the woman was grabbed from behind by a man, forced behind a bridge pillar and raped. The suspect then fled on foot. Oakville‘s first Easter Parade will take place this Saturday, April 10th, The parade is sponsored by a number of local churches representâ€" ing 10 different denominations. The woman went out to the North Service Road and flagged down a passing motorist who drove her to the Oakville district police station. Investigation into the attack was conducted by Sgt. Carey Smith, Det. Constable Ivan L‘ Ortye and Det. Constable Jennifer Knight of the Oakville Criminal Investigation Bureau. Police said the woman didn‘t know her attacker. Facing a charge of sexual assault, choking and threatening death is Joseph Bernard Hanley, 33, of Lakeshore Road West. Hanley was held in police custody pending a bail hearing. Easter Parade The parade will begin at the corâ€" ner of Kerr and Stewart streets at 11 Included in the parade will be 10 floats, each created by a different church, plus the Salvation Army Band, and the Christian Motorcycle Club. Grand marshals leading the parade will be Mayor Ann Mulvale, and Paul and Eleanor Henderson. "All you hear is bad press about teenagers," said Carnovale. "These two groups were outstanding." ROAR president, Bob McIntosh also reported brisk sales of associaâ€" tion memberships at the Easter Egg Hunt. Following their success with the hunt, Carnovale and her social comâ€" mittee are turning their attention to the ROAR garage sale at River Oaks Recreation Centre on June 5th, and the committee has also booked the centre for their first New Year‘s Eve dance. COMPUTER PROGRAM In other ROAR news, the board voted last week to write a letter to the Halton Board of Education, the press, and Ward 3 trustee, John Scheel, indicating support for the public school program at River GINO‘S PIZZA c i Lube, Oil, _ Filter 1 {e (up to 5L oil) 31595 â€"â€" 3xGâ€"â€" Safety Inspection Check Out Our New Chicken Wings 338â€"0097 MEMBER autonots Upper 6th Plaza 1500 6th Line, Oakville /) Expires Apr, 30/23 _I ~oan mm = // w wane sns mae wure se mm wre L 1 Expires April 30/93 Expires April 30/93 PIZZAS I Oaks Public School which includes computer education. â€" McIntosh â€" who has children at the school â€" suggested the letter be written in wake of a recent meeting with Scheel and River Oaks parents. Parents objected to a motion put forward by Scheel requesting an official report from the Halton Board of Education on the computer program in place at River Oaks Public School. Scheel told this reporter that he will take his motion off the books at the next school board meeting, but expects that the Board will be supâ€" plying him with that information soon. The motion to write to the school board was opposed by directors Sue Ramsayâ€"Roddick and (her husband) Gord Roddick who stated the school is only supported by a third of the River Oaks population, and they felt it was a Parentâ€"Teacher concern. "We should take a stand as a committee," said McIntosh. "I don‘t think this matter is over yet." The next ROAR meeting will be held on May 6th at River Oaks Public School. .i(’fms ickâ€"up pdelivér;, with .3 items Includes 1 tb. chicken wings COUPON OFFER ONLY!
