By CHERYL ELLIOT Special to the North News Glen Abbey youth have plenty to look forward to this summer. The Glen Abbey Residents Association (GARA) is working with a local church to set up a program of activiâ€" ties in the neighborhood for chilâ€" dren age 10 to 13. GARA is disâ€" cussing with an area land developer the prospect of using one of their maintenance units as a youth dropâ€" in centre. Youth dropâ€"in centre among GARA‘s goals A federal grant providing funds for the Glen Abbey Community Church to hire a youth worker for nine weeks has enabled the church and GARA to coâ€"operate in setting up a youth program this summer, Grant Buchanâ€"Terrell told the GARA board of directors at their monthly meeting Monday night. He said the results of a recent GARA survey of youth in the pubâ€" lic and separate schools serving Glen Abbey will be used to design the summer program. The Town of Oakville is also coming to the aid of the youth. It will be providing two rooms â€" the gym and the community room, at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre is to be used for the program. Buchanâ€"Terrell said the GARA surâ€" vey showed the recreation centre is a popular choice of location for the program. The Town will also assist the church and GARA in hiring and training staff. "It‘s a prefabricated storage building on the GENSTAR site on Third Line," he said, "and they are looking for someone who is interâ€" ested in taking it." GARA will have to look at the "physical appropriateness" of the building, said Buchanâ€"Terrell. It will have to be dismantled and reloâ€" cated on public or donated lands and will also require a concrete foundation. "It is not a done deal yet," he said. "This will be very much a long term project." REGIONAL PLANNING In other GARA news, James Stock, chair of the Planning and Development Committee, told the board that, after reviewing the draft New Halton Official Plan, he was troubled by the impact it could have on the community. "I‘m concerned that the role of the municipal government and council is being diminished," he said. "The ability to plan the Town of Oakville is being transferred to the Region of Halton." According to Stock, the draft plan shows the planning interests of the Region will take precedence over those of the Town. He pointed out, for example, that the draft plan states the Region‘s For Full P housing policies will permit "lot intensification such as accessory apartments or garden suites in all residential neighborhoods provided safety and other reasonable stanâ€" dards are met". Stock is arranging for a represenâ€" tative from the Halton Planning and Development department to attend GARA‘s next board meeting to disâ€" cuss concerns with the draft plan.
