Industrial designer chosen from field of 16 directors as president By CHERYL ELLIOT Special to the North News One month after the River Oaks Association of Residents (ROAR) annuâ€" al general meeting, and just prior to the election of the executive, six more River Oaks residents turned up at ROAR‘s monthly meeting on Nov. 4th, and volâ€" unteered to serve on the board. An unprecedented number of 16 directors made it easy to fill the board‘s nine executive positions, with only two positions being contested. Jim Richards, serving his second term as a director, was elected president of the residents‘ association. Richards, who lives on Sixth Line, is a partner in an industrial design compaâ€" ny and a member of several boards. He has served as director of planning and development and ROAR‘s representaâ€" tive to the Federation of Oakville Residents Groups (FORG), positions he will continue to fill, as well as this presiâ€" dency. "I am only as good as the people who work with me," Richards said of his new role. ‘"I am just one spoke in the ROAR wheel. "We have to keep that wheel balâ€" anced and well greased if we want to work together for the best interest of the community." Richards will be getting help from newcomer Karen Bragg, the new viceâ€" president. Alan Wisby has retained his position as treasurer and new director Fran Burbidge is the secretary. Lesley Ramsayâ€"Carnovale and Susan Ramsayâ€"Roddick will continue to be coâ€"chairs of the Social Committee and Bob Caster is chair of Public Relations and Membership. Pasquale Agusta, a Markle Drive resident, who joined the board Thursday night, takes over from Ralph Carnovale as director of Community Consultation and Carnovale shares the chair of the Education Committee with Jim Richards and new director, John Kurgan. Other directors to join the board on Thursday night were Carolyn Caine, an environmental consultant who lives on Markle Drive; Amy Ito, director of nursâ€" ing at the Mississauga Hospital and a resident of Mayflower Boulevard; Noel PHONE: 607â€"4263 (GAME) ENTERTAINMENT GROUP IN [! Thursday‘s meeting was punctuated by discussion of issues specific to areas where some directors live. Caine was concerned about the erecâ€" tion of a berm to diminish traffic noise close to her Markle Drive home. Ito questioned Ward 5 Councillor Sean Weir at length on the criteria for evaluating the Sixth Line Project, a pilot project of mixed housing soon to be built in River Oaks. Bragg said O‘Donohue Avenue resiâ€" dents were pleased that a Town of Oakville survey, following the removal of the left turn prohibition from O‘Donohue on to McDowell Avenue, reports 630 cars use the street daily. This count is up from 525 before the sign was removed, but less than the figure the resâ€" idents had expected. The new board also raised concerns with Ward 5 Halton Board of Education trustee, Debbie Marklew, about the board‘s capital expenditure forecast durâ€" ing a extended in camera session. "There were particulars in the foreâ€" cast that caused us some concern," said Richards afterwards. "We felt that as representatives of the community, we should speak up on what we consider are injustices."
