Mark Brown, Ward 4 councilâ€" lor, brought this issue to the attenâ€" tion of the Residents association. He explained that although other fire departments in Oakville have four fire fighters on duty at all times, budget restraints are the reason the Glen Abbey station has just three. Apparently, it would cost $240,000 a year to increase the number of fire fighters from three to four because eight extra people would have to be added to staff the station round the clock. This works out to an additional $8 per person a year in taxes in Oakville. What this means, is that if there is a fire in Glen Abbey, the fire department has to wait for backup from another station before enterâ€" ing a house. Right now, there are only three fire fighters on duty at a time, but the minimum requirement for entering a house that is on fire is four â€" two to enter the house, one to operate the nozzle, and one on the truck. Increasing the number of fireâ€" fighters currently on duty at the Glen Abbey station was a major issue of concern addressed at Monday night‘s Glen Abbey Residents Association (GARA) meeting.
