Gibbs has a message for those with chronically sore feet: there is hope. "Some people take foot and back pain for granted, and they shouldn‘t," he said. "I get a great deal of satisfaction when I can help someone live a painâ€"free life and resume their normal activities." For more information, contact Kathi Gardner at 842â€"5555 Customâ€"made lifts, soles and orthotics fitted by Brad Gibbs have helped many local patients. In 90 per cent of cases Gibbs folâ€" lows up on a course of action preâ€" scribed by a doctor. Gibbs may creâ€" ate a customâ€"made foot orthotic from a plaster cast, develop a cusâ€" tom or nonâ€"custom knee or ankle brace, or recommend custom footwear and modifications such as lightweight lifts and rocker soles, as requested by the doctor. Common foot problems treated include bunions, shin splints, hammer toés, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis (commonly known as a heel spur), callouses and "overâ€"pronation", which is when the foot rolls inward excessively. For each problem, there may be any one of several causes â€" for example, a bunion may be caused by heredity, poorâ€"fitâ€" ting footwear, poor gait mechanics or a combination of these. Gibbs sometimes finds himself working as a detective, especially in the 10 per cent of his cases when the doctor‘s note simply says "Foot pain, please treat." Gibbs enjoys these challenges and he is usually able to track down a cause and treat (See "kinesiology" on next page)
